Akron Completes MAC Tournament Three-Peat Behind Clutch Three from Scott-Mar 15, 2026
A clutch three with six seconds left from Shammah Scott (6'2''-G) secured second-seeded Akron its third consecutive Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Title on Saturday night at Rocket Arena as the Zips defeated fourth-seeded Toledo, 79-75.
Tournament MVP Tavari Johnson (6'0''-G) and Amani Lyles (6'9''-F) paced Akron with 15 points apiece, while Scott and Bowen Hardman (6'3''-G) (four threes) tallied 12 points each.
After defeating NIU on Senior Day, Akron went 17-1 in the MAC the past two seasons. The Zips' 34-2 record in conference play the past two seasons is the best two-year stretch in conference history.
After setting the program record for wins in the regular season last season with 25, Akron reset the record books with its 26th regular season win in 2025-26 against NIU on Senior Day.

Peter Suder, guard from the Miami University, picked up the Player of the Year at the NCAA Division I. He was also voted to the First Team. With Suder's excellent performance, the Miami University achieved the best record of the season in the league, finishing with an impressive 31 to 1 in the regular season. Suder averaged over 14 points and 4 rebounds per game in the league. His 37 points against Buffalo were the most he scored in the 25 26 season.
Tavari Johnson, guard from the Akron Zips, was named the All-Tournament MVP of NCAA Division I. He received multiple other awards, was selected to the First Team and Tournament Team. With Johnson's excellent performance, the Akron Zips achieved the best record of the season in the league, finishing with an impressive 29 to 5 in the regular season. Johnson recorded 21 points and 5 assists per game that season in the league. He has totalled 19 games of 20 or more points on the year and registered 30 or more points in 2 games. Johnson had double-doubles in 2 games during the event. His 35 points against the Yale were the most he scored in the 25 26 season. Among many awards he was selected to the NABC Division I All-East District Second Team in 2025. He was also selected as the News-Gazette Illinois All-State Honorable Mention back in 2021.
Javontae Campbell, guard from the Bowling Green State University, was voted the Defensive Player of the Year at the NCAA Division I. He collected multiple other honors, was chosen to the First Team and Defensive Team. Campbell recorded almost 19 points and 5 assists per game over the season in the league. He has totalled 12 games of 20 or more points on the year and logged 30 or more points in 2 games. Campbell's 47 points against the UMass were the most he scored in the 25 26 season.
Amani Lyles, forward from the Akron Zips, was named to the First Team of NCAA Division I. He received multiple other awards, earned a spot in the Defensive Team and Tournament Team. Lyles averaged over 15 points and almost 8 rebounds per game in the league. He has totalled 4 games of 20 or more points and registered double-doubles in 9 games on the year. Lyles' 26 points against the Ball State University were the most he scored in the 25 26 season. He was selected to the Ohio Division II All-Central District First Team as well as the All-Ohio Division II Second Team back in 2021.
Delrecco Gillespie, forward from the Kent State University, was voted to the First Team at the NCAA Division I. He was also selected to the Defensive Team. Gillespie notched almost 17 points and over 8 rebounds per game that season in the league. He has totalled 3 games of 20 or more points and recorded double-doubles in 5 games on the year. Gillespie's 27 points against the Ohio were the most he scored in the 25 26 season.
