No. 1 Akron Claims Second-Straight MAC Tournament Championship-Mar 16, 2025
Redshirt junior Nate Johnson (6'3''-G) (Liberty Township, Ohio) hit a buzzer-beating shot with only two seconds left on the clock to lead the Akron men's basketball team over Miami, 76-74, to capture the program's sixth Mid-American Conference Tournament title and seventh NCAA Tournament berth at Rocket Arena on Saturday (March 15).
The Zips (28-6) had two players score in double figures, led by Johnson, who had 22 points and five assists. Junior Tavari Johnson (5'1''-PG) (La Grange, Ill.) tacked on 15 points and junior Amani Lyles (6'7''-F) (Columbus, Ohio) added six points and 14 rebounds.
Akron out-rebounded Miami, 35-26, in Saturday's game, paced by Lyles' 14 boards. The Zips also grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and scored seven second-chance points.

How It Happened
Akron narrowed its deficit late in the second half to 72-67 before going on a 7-0 run to seize a 74-72 lead with 1:05 to go in the contest. The Zips held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 76-74 win. Akron shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting seven shots from deep to score 21 of its 42 points.

Nate Johnson, guard from the Akron Zips, earned the All-Tournament MVP at the NCAA Division I. He received multiple other awards, picked up the Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and earned a spot in the First Team, Defensive Team and Tournament Team. With Johnson's excellent performance, the Akron Zips achieved the best record of the season in the league, finishing with an impressive 27 to 6 in the regular season. Johnson averaged over 13 points and 5 rebounds per game in the league. His 31 points against Toledo were the most he scored in the 24 25 season.
Tavari Johnson, point guard from the Akron Zips, was voted to the First Team of NCAA Division I. He was also selected to the Tournament Team. Johnson recorded almost 13 points and 4 assists per game that season in the league. His 27 points against the Northern Kentucky University were the most he scored in the 24 25 season. He was selected as the News-Gazette Illinois All-State Honorable Mention back in 2021.
Ugnius Jarusevicius, Lithuanian forward from the Central Michigan University, was chosen to the First Team at the NCAA Division I. He registered over 16 points and 7 rebounds per game over the season in the league. Jarusevicius has totalled 9 games of 20 or more points on the year and had 30 or more points in 2 games. He recorded double-doubles in 9 games during the event. Jarusevicius' 32 points against the Kent State University were the most he scored in the 24 25 season. Jarusevicius' team won the Lithuanian Under 18 League Regular Season in 2021.
Von Cameron Davis, forward from the Kent State University, was named to the First Team of NCAA Division I. He averaged over 15 points and almost 4 rebounds per game in the league. Suder logged almost 14 points and 5 rebounds per game that season in the league. He has totalled 6 games of 20 or more points and registered double-doubles in 2 games on the year. Suder's 42 points against the Air Force were the most he scored in the 24 25 season. Among many awards he was selected to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team in 2023. He was also selected as the Associated Press Indiana All-State Honorable Mention between 2020 and 2021.
