Connecticut wins NCAA crown, handing Butler
another title-game loss, 53-41 -
Apr 5, 2011For the last 28 days, Connecticut had been on a mission. And frankly, from the onset it seemed impossible. Win five games in five days in the Big East Tournament. Then win six games in the NCAA Tournament and walk away from Reliant Stadium with the championship trophy. So once One Shining Moment had been wrapped up, the nets clipped down and the new national champions escorted off the court, it was only fitting what was left on both rims. Five knots on one. Six knots on the other. By coincidence or purpose, Connecticut left that as its final mark on the court this season. 'This stage is spectacular', UConn freshman Shabazz Napier (6'0''-G) said during the celebratory fray. 'We had a lot of heart. Throughout the season, weve been doubted and we always felt like we had heart. This is a team that never quit and as you can see, we put on a great run through the tournament.' It's crowning moment in tonight's National Championship game - a 53-41 victory over once again runner-up Butler - wasn't the prettiest night that the Huskies have strung together over the past month. But it did the trick just fine. And so while the celebration went on, Jim Calhoun - proud new owner of a third national championship - just stood back and watched it all unfold. When the nets were being cut, he stood at the base of the stage and smiled, his arm draped over longtime friend and associate head coach George Blaney . Then when the annual highlight finish to the NCAA Tournament played on the jumbo screens, he sporadically watched - choosing to watch his teams reactions. 'This group has taken me on one of the great, special journeys, better than any I could possibly imagine', Calhoun said. 'When I needed maybe a little more of what I do - which is teach and coach for 39 years - they gave me it ten-fold.' The result was a result unlike any seen in the previous 72 national title games. Butler, denied the title for the second straight season, shot just 18.8 percent from the floor - the lowest in championship game history. Even more mind-boggling were the 12 total field goals that the Bulldogs (28-10) mustered over 40 minutes of play against a stingy UConn (32-9) defensive effort. For the game, Butler registered just three two-point field goals. Without question, 41 points, 12-of-64 is not good enough to win any game, let alone the national championship game, Butler head coach Brad Stevens said. I thought we guarded as well as we could. I thought we gambled a little bit late because we had to. Because we were just trying to figure out something to generate a turn of the tide. And we just couldnt. It meant that the Huskies didn't need a superhero performance from its star, Kemba Walker (6'1''-G-90) - though he did lead all scorers with 16 points. Alex Oriakhi (6'9''-F/C-90) pitched in with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman Jeremy Lamb (6'5''-G/F) scored all 12 of his points in the second half as UConn pulled away. It was Lamb too, who helped neutralize the scoring punch of Butlers Shelvin Mack (6'3''-G-90), who was held to just 13 points. And once Connecticut cut off the head of Butlers offense in Mack, it put the clamps on the Bulldogs who clanged their way through a 10-minute stretch in the second half. And with that, Connecticuts surreal run had its final chapter. When the final horn sounded, Walker stood near mid-court with his hands in his face screaming in jubilation through tears. He knew what had been accomplished on this night. Something which nearly every step of the way, was doubted. From the beginning - when the walked into the Theater at Madison Square Garden for the Big Easts annual media day on Oct. 20 and saw their name slotted 10th in the preseason poll. To tonight - when they were presented with the championship trophy. We had a lot of doubters, Walker said. Big East Tournament? Came out strong and we got a lot of confidence from that tournament and we kind of felt unstoppable. It was right, we were unstoppable. Now were national champions. Were the best team in the country. *Courtesy of www.nj.com Wichita
State wins NIT title -
Apr 1, 2011The players flooded off the Wichita State bench, jumping together near the corner of the floor. Gregg Marshall smiled and pumped his fist. A few thousand fans dressed in yellow stood on their feet, cheering for a championship. Good luck convincing any of them that they didn't deserve it. Or that they didn't belong in a more prestigious postseason tournament. J.T. Durley (6'8''-F/C-88) and Graham Hatch (6'4''-G/F-86) scored 12 points each to lead a balanced offense, and the fourth-seeded Shockers simply overwhelmed top-seeded Alabama 66-57 on Thursday night to win the NIT championship at Madison Square Garden. Hatch was 4-for-4 from beyond the arc, including back-to-back shots in the closing minutes, as Wichita State (29-8) finished a remarkable postseason run in style. 'We obviously, as a team, have gone through a roller coaster,' Hatch said. 'We came back from those disappointments, we pulled together, and it's just magical.' Tony Mitchell (6'6''-F) had 13 points and 12 boards for Alabama (25-12), but he didn't get much help. Leading scorer Jamychal Green (6'9''-F-90) struggled with foul trouble and finished with 12 points, and Trevor Releford (6'1''-G) and Charvez Davis had 10 each. 'JaMychal is a key player to our team, he's a threat inside,' Davis said. 'We had to keep playing when he got out. We just didn't make enough plays.' Alabama briefly pulled ahead in the second half on a free throw by Chris Hines with 15:06 left, but Wichita State answered with eight straight points to regain control. Any doubt about the outcome was erased when Hatch hit a three-pointer from the top of the key with 4:13 remaining that extended the lead to 61-52. On the next possession, Hatch set up from the same spot and knocked down another three-pointer. The two clutch shots helped him earn the tournament MVP award. 'This is what you do it for, these moments,' Hatch said. 'We were disappointed in our conference tournament, so to have this opportunity to win such an amazing tournament as the NIT, this atmosphere, I couldn't imagine it.' Briefly: Washington junior guard Isaiah Thomas plans to enter the NBA draft but will not hire an agent. ... Wyoming hired Florida associate head coach Larry Shyatt as its next head basketball coach. ... Hofstra has signed first-year coach Mo Cassara to a new five-year contract. ... Prosecutors in Stillwater, Okla., asked that more charges be filed against Oklahoma State basketball player Darrell Williams, who is already facing four felony counts that accuse him of inappropriately touching two female students.
