Knights Defeat Dolphins: Bellarmine Wins Program's First #ASUNMadness - Mar 9, 2022
The Bellarmine Knights claimed their first Division I conference title with a 77-72 victory against Jacksonville on Tuesday evening in the 2022 ASUN Conference Men's Basketball Championship Final. Championship Most Valuable Player Dylan Penn (6'3''-G) scored 22 points to help guide BU to victory inside Freedom Hall.
After Jacksonville jumped ahead with the first four points of the game, the Knights stormed back with nine of their own unanswered thanks to three-pointers from Curtis Hopf (6'8''-F), Juston Betz (6'3''-G) and Penn. The hot shooting night for Bellarmine continued as the team held a 22-10 advantage at the 11:34 mark of the first half. The Knights were shooting 61.5% from the floor compared to only 46.5% by the Dolphins. Jacksonville continued to fight but was unable to trim the deficit below double digits and trailed, 36-26, at the half.
Although the Dolphins would cut the lead to 38-30, the Knights remained in control early in the second half and pushed their lead back to double digits at 44-33 off a fastbreak layup from Betz. Jacksonville would use a 7-2 run to cut into the Knights' lead before Scholar-Athlete of the Year CJ Fleming (6'0''-PG) hit an acrobatic shot that had BU up by eight again. The home team was quickly up by 12 again courtesy of back-to-back long-range buckets from Betz and Fleming. The Dolphins would battle back but the Knights would hold on to their lead and claim the 2022 league crown.
