We bring you last week's top former Hawkeyes players who are currently playing in pro basketball.
#1. Caitlin Clark, a talented 6'0'' point guard who graduated from Iowa in 2024 and received the All-Big Ten All-Tournament MVP award that year, is now showcasing her skills in the WNBA. Recently, in a game where her team, the Indiana Fever, unfortunately fell short against the Golden State Valkyries with a close score of 90-88, Clark demonstrated her prowess on the court. Despite the loss, Clark, the team's top scorer with 16 points, also contributed 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals in just 29 minutes of play. Her perfect performance at the free-throw line, going 8 for 8, highlighted her all-around abilities. It's worth noting that this is only Clark's second season in professional basketball, making her performance even more impressive.
Clark's remarkable individual season continues to impress, with impressive averages of 20.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, 7.9 assists (leading the league), and 1.3 steals per game over the seven games she has played so far. As a standout player, Clark's skills and contributions on the court are crucial for the Indiana Fever as they navigate through the challenges of the season. Despite the recent loss, Clark's consistent stellar performance hints at a promising future for this young WNBA champion.
#2. Kate Martin, a 25-year-old point guard standing at 6'0'' and an alumna of the Hawkeyes from 2024, who played a significant role in helping them become the champions of the Big Ten Tournament in that year, currently competes professionally in the WNBA. Unfortunately, in a recent game, Martin, playing for the Los Angeles Sparks, was unable to lead her team to victory against the Connecticut Sun. The Sparks, ranked sixth in the league, suffered a narrow 84-81 defeat on the road, marking their first loss after a three-game winning streak.
Despite her best efforts, Martin only managed to score 2 points and secure 1 rebound during the game against the Connecticut Sun. This performance, where she played for 13 minutes, was not one of her standout moments. In the ongoing season, Martin has been averaging 2.6 points per game over five games.
#3. Spanish champion Megan Gustafson, a 6'4'' center who graduated from Iowa in 2019 and received the All-Big Ten Player of the Year award that year, currently showcases her talent as a professional player in the WNBA. In a recent game, she led the Portland Fire to a resounding 100-84 victory over the Indiana Fever, with an impressive performance that earned her the title of MVP. Scoring 22 points in just 29 minutes, Gustafson's contribution on the court was crucial to her team's success against their opponents.
Despite Portland Fire having a somewhat lackluster 6-4 record this season, Gustafson's consistent performance is notable, averaging 10.4 points per game and 2.8 rebounds per game over the course of 10 games. Her dual American and Spanish citizenship also allows her the flexibility to play professionally in Spain as a domestic player, showcasing her versatility and talent on an international level.
Gustafson's exceptional skills and determination were on full display during the game against Indiana Fever, solidifying her status as a finalist and proving her value as a key player for her team.
#4. Australian Hannah Stewart, a former 6'2'' forward from Hawkeyes alumni (2019), who helped them secure the Australian SBL Regular Season Champion title that year, currently plays professionally in Australia. Despite her efforts, Stewart could not lead the South Adelaide Panthers (6-5) to victory against the Sabres (9-2) in the Australian NBL One North, the second division of the league. In the game, Stewart contributed 6 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 23 minutes of play.
The South Adelaide Panthers, who are currently in fourth place with a 6-5 record, suffered a tough 79-55 defeat in Pasadena against the second-ranked Sabres in the Central group. This marks Stewart's fifth season with the team. In a notable performance against Sturt S., Stewart showcased her skills with 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. However, despite her individual contribution, the team fell short of securing the victory.
Throughout this season, Stewart has been averaging 5.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.7 steals per game in the 11 games played so far.
