Here is the weekly review of the top performing Broncos alumni, who are currently playing in pro basketball.
#1. Derrick Alston Jr., a 6'9'' forward who graduated from Boise State in 2021 and received the All-MWC First Team award that same year, is currently playing professionally in Italy. In a recent game, he led Virtus Segafredo Bologna to a convincing 104-85 victory over the seventh-ranked Openjobmetis Varese. Alston Jr. was named the MVP of the game after contributing 19 points and 4 rebounds in just 23 minutes of play.
Virtus Segafredo Bologna, with a record of 23-5, sits at the top of the Italian Serie A league standings following their fifth consecutive win. With only three games remaining in the Regular Season, each upcoming match will be crucial for the team. This season marks Alston Jr.'s debut with Virtus Segafredo Bologna, and his impact on the court has been significant.
His stellar performance against Varese highlights his importance to the team, as his scoring ability and rebounding skills were instrumental in securing the victory. With an average of 12.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game in the 27 games he has played thus far, Alston Jr. has been a key player for his team throughout the season.
#2. In an exciting match on Sunday night, the experienced Liberian player Thomas Bropleh, standing at 6'5'' and 34 years old, and a former Broncos alumnus from 2014, showcased his talent by leading Oradea to a thrilling victory over Dinamo Bucuresti in the Romanian Liga Nationala Baschet de Masculin. #4. German Christian Sengfelder, a 6'8'' power forward and 31-year-old Broncos alumnus from 2018, received the CoSIDA NCAA Division I Academic All-District 7 First Team award that year. He currently plays professionally in Germany and recently led Ratiopharm Ulm to a decisive victory against the 15th-ranked Skyliners with a dominating score of 103-64 in the German easyCredit BBL during Sunday night's game. Despite playing only 11 minutes, Sengfelder managed to contribute significantly, scoring 11 points and providing 3 assists.
Ratiopharm Ulm, now placed sixth in the league with a record of 19-15, has already completed the Regular Season. Sengfelder's standout performance against Frankfurt showcased his skills on the court, as he scored 11 points, grabbed 2 rebounds, and distributed 3 assists to help secure the win. #5. James Webb III, a 6'9'' power forward who graduated from Boise State in 2016 and received the USBWA All-District VIII Team award that year, is currently playing professionally in Spain. #9. South Sudanese player Emmanuel Akot, standing at 6'8'' and 27 years old, completed his studies at WKU in 2023. He previously played for Boise St. from 2019 to 2022, where he notably helped them secure the MWC Regular Season Champion title during his time there. Akot now competes professionally in Canada.
In a recent game for the Winnipeg Sea Bears in the Canadian Elite Basketball League, Akot made a significant impact in their 77-75 victory over the Stingers. He showcased his versatility on the court by contributing 7 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in 35 minutes of play. This performance marked his debut for the Winnipeg Sea Bears this season.
Akot continued to shine in the game against Edmonton, where he played a crucial role by scoring 7 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out 5 assists to help his team secure another win. His exceptional display earned him the title of the game's champion.
It is also noteworthy that Akot holds dual American and South Sudanese citizenship, allowing him the opportunity to play as a domestic player in South Sudan.
#10. Canadian Abu Kigab, a 6'7'' forward who is 27 years old and an alumnus of the Broncos from 2022, currently plays professionally in Jordan. Despite his outstanding performance as the All-MWC All-Tournament MVP in 2022, he was unable to lead Al Faisaly to victory against Amman United.
