Here is the weekly review of the top performing Colonials alumni, who are currently playing in pro basketball.
#1. Experienced champion Karvel Anderson, a 6'2'' shooting guard at 34 years old, graduated from RMU in 2014 and received the All-NEC Player of the Year award. Currently playing professionally in Italy, he recently led Giorgio Tesi Group Pistoia to a thrilling 1-point victory over the closely-ranked Puglia (12-25) with a final score of 79-78 in the Italian Serie A2 league (second division) during Friday night's game. Anderson's outstanding performance earned him the title of MVP, as he scored an impressive 28 points and secured 4 rebounds in 34 minutes of play.
Despite Pistoia being placed 18th in the league standings, Anderson's stellar display helped his team secure the championship. The Play-Out Round has already concluded, and Anderson's remarkable skills were on full display, contributing significantly to his team's success.
Throughout the season, Anderson has maintained high statistics, averaging 15.9 points per game, along with 3.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists in the 15 games he has played so far. As a finalist, his exceptional contributions on the court have undoubtedly played a crucial role in Pistoia's performance in the league.
#2. French champion Yannis Mendy, a 30-year-old 6'8'' forward and Colonials alumni from 2020, who helped them win the NEC Tournament that year, currently plays professionally in France. Despite his solid performance, he could not lead FOS Provence Basket (26-14) to victory against Lorient (22-17) in the French Nationale Masculine 1 (third division). Mendy showcased his skills by scoring 8 points, grabbing 9 rebounds, and dishing out 4 assists in 33 minutes of play.
FOS Provence Basket, who are currently in third place with a record of 26-14, suffered a 65-72 defeat on the road against the lower-ranked Lorient, who are positioned at #10 in Group A. With only two games remaining until the end of the Second Stage, each upcoming game becomes crucial for the team.
This season marks Mendy's debut with FOS Provence Basket, where he has been consistently contributing with an average of 4.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game over 37 games. Despite his impressive individual performance in the game against Lorient, his team was unable to secure the victory.
#3. In a recent match, the talented Italian player Mattia Acunzo, a 25-year-old power forward standing 6'8'' and a graduate of RMU in 2022, showcased his skills on the basketball court. Playing professionally in Italy, Acunzo led Montecatini to a 73-61 victory over the 11th-ranked team, Chiusi, in the Italian Serie B Nazionale, the country's third division. In this game, he demonstrated his prowess by scoring 18 points, securing 12 rebounds, and making 3 blocks, all while maintaining a perfect 8-for-8 record from the free-throw line in 31 minutes of play.
Acunzo's stellar performance did not go unnoticed, as he was named the MVP of the game and received the Triple-Double Badge from eurobasket.com for his impressive display of skills. This recognition solidified his reputation as a champion on the court, showcasing his ability to lead his team to victory when it mattered most.
Currently, Gema Montecatini holds the fourth position in Group A, with a record of 25 wins and 11 losses. Acunzo's contribution to the team has been significant throughout the season, with notable statistics of 12.2 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game, and 1.3 assists per game in 34 appearances. His consistent performance and leadership on the court have undoubtedly played a crucial role in Montecatini's success this season, positioning him as a standout player and a true champion in the Italian basketball scene.
#4. Italian basketball champion Alfredo Boglio, a 6'3'' guard and 23-year-old Colonials alumni from 2024, showcased his talent by leading Vigevano to a victory against the eighth-ranked Faenza with a score of 80-69 in the Italian Serie B Nazionale, the third division of Italian basketball, during Sunday night's game. In an impressive display, he scored 11 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and dished out 4 assists in just 22 minutes of play.
Playing professionally in Italy, Boglio has made a significant impact in his first season with Elachem Vigevano 1955, who currently hold the top spot in Group A. His consistent performance is reflected in his overall season statistics, averaging 10.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.4 steals per game over 35 games.
Boglio's contributions on the court not only helped secure the recent victory against Faenza but also solidified his position as a formidable finalist in the Italian basketball scene. His skills and dedication truly exemplify why he is recognized as a champion in the sport.
