Here is the weekly review of the top performing Colonials alumni, who are currently playing in pro basketball.
#1. Tyler Cavanaugh, a 6'9'' power forward who graduated from GWU in 2017, has been showcasing his skills in the Turkish professional league. Playing for Bahcesehir Koleji Istanbul, he recently led his team to a convincing victory over the 13th-ranked Petkimspor with a score of 95-76. In this game, the 32-year-old champion contributed significantly, scoring 11 points, securing 8 rebounds, and providing 1 assist in just 24 minutes of play.
Bahcesehir Koleji Istanbul currently holds the third position in the league standings with a record of 21-8 as the Regular Season has concluded. Cavanaugh's stellar performance against Petkim not only helped his team secure a win but also demonstrated his prowess on the court. His consistent performance throughout the season is reflected in his impressive statistics of 12.7 points per game, 5.5 rebounds per game, and 1.6 assists per game. As a finalist, Tyler Cavanaugh continues to make significant contributions to his team's success in the league.
#2. Japanese basketball player Yuta Watanabe, a 6'9'' forward who is 31 years old and an alum of Colonials from 2018, recently achieved a remarkable feat in the Japanese B1 League. Watanabe, a former All-Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year, currently plays professionally in Japan and is a standout player for the Chiba Jets.
In a thrilling derby game, Watanabe led the Chiba Jets to a 96-87 victory over the 11th-ranked Chiba team. His outstanding performance on Sunday night earned him the title of MVP of the game, as he contributed 21 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in just 31 minutes of play. This victory marked the fifth consecutive win for the Chiba Jets, who currently hold the second position in the East group standings as the regular season has already concluded.
Watanabe's impressive season averages of 13.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game showcase his consistent impact on the court. His standout performance against Chiba further solidified his status as the champion of the game, demonstrating his skill and leadership that have been instrumental in his team's success throughout the season.
#3. Brendan Adams, a 6'4'' guard who graduated from GWU in 2023 and received the All-Atlantic 10 Most Improved Player of the Year award, is currently playing professionally in Russia. In a recent game, Adams, in his first season with the team, displayed an impressive double-double performance against Lokomotiv, scoring 15 points, grabbing 3 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists in 40 minutes of play. Despite his stellar efforts, Adams could not prevent Parma-Pari from a 87-82 defeat at home by the higher-ranked Lokomotiv (#4).
Throughout the season, Adams has been excelling individually, boasting strong statistics with an average of 15.1 points per game, 2.8 rebounds per game, 5.8 assists per game (ranking fourth in the league), and 1.1 steals per game. Despite his outstanding performance, Adams and his team have faced challenges, but his talent and contributions on the court continue to highlight him as a standout player in the league.
#4. Panamanian Ricardo Lindo Jr., a 25-year-old 6'8'' forward and Colonials alumni from 2023, currently plays professionally in France. Despite his best efforts, Lindo Jr. could not lead his team, JL Bourg en Bresse, to victory against Saint-Quentin in the French Betclic ELITE league. In the game, he contributed 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 20 minutes on the court.
Unfortunately, JL Bourg en Bresse suffered a significant 89-71 defeat on the road against Saint-Quentin, a team with a less favorable record. This loss marked JL Bourg en Bresse's third consecutive defeat, emphasizing the importance of every remaining game in the Regular Season.
Lindo Jr. displayed an impressive performance in the matchup, recording 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 assist. Despite his strong showing, his team was unable to secure a win. Throughout the season, Lindo Jr. has maintained averages of 8.0 points per game, 4.3 rebounds per game, and 1.1 assists per game.
It is worth noting that Lindo Jr. is a naturalized American, showcasing his versatility and talent on the basketball court.
#5. Puerto Rican athlete Arnaldo Barea, a towering center standing at 6'8'' and 28 years old, is making waves in the Hungarian Nemzeti Bajnoksag I/A league. Although he graduated from St. John's in 2021, he showcased his skills at GWU from 2016 to 2020 before embarking on his professional career in Hungary.
In a recent game, Barea led Szombathely to a remarkable victory against the third-ranked Kaposvari with a final score of 91-81. Displaying his prowess on the court, he achieved a double-double by contributing 11 points and securing an equal number of rebounds in just 25 minutes of play. This stellar performance helped his team secure the win and solidified his reputation as a champion player.
Currently, Falco-Vulcano Energia KC Szombathely holds the sixth position in the Play-Off group standings with a record of 19-7. Barea's notable achievements include averaging 10.6 points per game, 9.8 rebounds per game (ranking fourth best in the league), and 1.7 assists per game this season. His exceptional skills and contributions have rightfully earned him the admiration of fans and the prestigious Triple-Double Badge from eurobasket.com, further establishing him as a finalist.
#6. German Benjamin Schroeder, a 22-year-old 6'7'' guard/forward and alumnus of Colonials from 2024, showcased his talent as he led Basketball Loewen Braunschweig to a thrilling 98-97 victory over the seventh-ranked EnBW Ludwigsburg in the German easyCredit BBL on Saturday night. In this intense matchup, Schroeder's performance was truly exceptional, scoring 11 points, securing 7 rebounds, and providing 1 assist in just 26 minutes on the court. His remarkable contributions were instrumental in guiding his team to triumph, ultimately earning them the title of the champion in the game. Throughout the season, Schroeder has been maintaining an average of 5.5 points per game and 2.6 rebounds per game, showcasing his consistency and valuable presence on the court for his team.
#7. Experienced Russian point guard, Tony Taylor, standing at 6'1'' and 35 years old, a graduate of GWU in 2012, currently playing professionally in Turkey, was unable to lead Trabzonspor to victory against Turk Telekom. In the recent game, Taylor's performance fell short of his usual standards, as he scored just 3 points and contributed 7 assists in 25 minutes of play. Despite his efforts, Trabzonspor was defeated by a score of 81-72. Although Taylor's individual performance against Turk Telekom was noteworthy with 3 points, 2 rebounds, and 7 assists, it was not enough to secure a win for his team. Currently playing professionally in Spain, Larsen recently faced a tough match where he was unable to lead Alicante to victory last Saturday. Despite his stellar performance, Alicante suffered a 97-92 defeat on their home court against the lower-ranked Grupo Ureta Tizona Burgos (#13).
In the game, Larsen showcased his talent by achieving a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, along with contributing 6 assists in just 29 minutes of play. Despite his remarkable efforts, Alicante could not secure the win against Burgos T.
Throughout the season, Larsen has been delivering an outstanding performance, averaging 16.6 points per game (ranking him third best in the league), 5.9 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. His impressive stats reflect his valuable contribution to the team, even in the face of challenging matchups like the recent game against Burgos Tizona Burgos.
#9. Argentinian player Patricio Garino, standing at 6'7'' and at 32 years old, graduated from GWU in 2016, where he played a key role in helping them become NIT Champions that year. Currently playing professionally in Spain for Movistar Estudiantes Madrid, Garino recently contributed to their victory over the 15th-ranked Palma BM with a final score of 73-70 in the Spanish Primera FEB league. Despite scoring just 2 points in a brief 3-minute appearance on the court, those points proved to be crucial in securing the win for his team, allowing them to claim the champion title. Throughout the season, Garino has been averaging 10.0 points per game and 2.8 rebounds per game. In addition to his Argentinian heritage, he also holds Italian nationality.
