Every week we bring you a list of the top former Zips players who continue their career in pro basketball.
#1. Jimond Ivey, a 6'5'' guard who is 30 years old and graduated from Akron in 2019, showcased his skills for Ostioneros de Guaymas during their recent game. Despite his impressive performance, Guaymas was unable to secure a victory, falling 115-105 to the second-ranked Halcones de Ciudad Obregon on the road last Tuesday. Ivey, who plays professionally in Mexico, contributed significantly to his team's effort by recording 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in 37 minutes of play. Notably, he made all five of his free throw attempts. This game marked Ivey's debut for Ostioneros de Guaymas this season, and he made a strong impact by delivering a standout performance against Ciudad Obregon. Despite his notable contributions, Guaymas was unable to overcome their opponents and emerged as the runner-up in the match.
#2. Isaiah Gray, a 24-year-old guard standing at 6'3'' and an alumnus of Zips from 2025, currently plays professionally in the Czech Republic. In a recent game against the eighth-ranked NH Ostrava, Gray showcased his skills and prowess on the court. He played a vital role in his team's impressive 100-68 victory, scoring 10 points, grabbing 5 rebounds, and dishing out 7 assists in just 26 minutes of play.
Gray's team, BK Opava, currently holds the fifth position in the Places 1-8 group with an 18-18 record. With only one more game to go in the Second Stage, the upcoming match is of great importance for the team's playoff aspirations.
Gray's stellar performance against NH Ostrava not only highlighted his individual talent but also contributed significantly to his team's success as the champion. Throughout the season, Gray has maintained solid statistics, averaging 12.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. His consistency and contributions on the court have been instrumental in his team's journey towards achieving their goals as the champion.
#3. Trendon Hankerson, a 6'2'' guard who is 25 years old and graduated from Akron in 2023, currently plays professionally in Romania. In a recent game, he was unable to help his team Brasov (12-16) secure a victory against Sibiu (#7) last Saturday. Despite his standout performance where he emerged as the top scorer with 15 points and contributed 6 rebounds in just 24 minutes, Brasov suffered a defeat at home with a score of 89-78.
As the Regular Season nears its end with only three games remaining, each match becomes crucial for teams like Brasov. Hankerson showcased his skills against Sibiu by not only scoring 15 points but also grabbing 6 rebounds and providing 2 assists. Despite his impressive individual performance, Brasov was unable to secure the win.
Throughout the season, Hankerson has maintained solid statistics with an average of 13.0 points per game, 3.3 rebounds per game, and 3.3 assists per game. As the competition intensifies with the approaching end of the season, Hankerson's contributions will be vital for Brasov as they aim to improve their standing and make a mark in the league.
#4. Xavier Castaneda, a 26-year-old guard standing at 6'1" and an alumnus of the Zips from 2023, is currently playing professionally in Spain. Despite his best efforts, Castaneda, a MAC All-Tournament Team award recipient, was unable to lead MoraBanc Andorra (7-20) to victory against UCAM (20-7) in the Spanish Liga Endesa. In a recent game, where MoraBanc Andorra suffered a 95-89 loss to the higher-ranked UCAM (#3) in Murcia, Castaneda contributed 8 points in just 15 minutes on the court.
Although Castaneda showcased an impressive performance against Murcia by scoring 8 points, securing 1 rebound, and providing 2 assists, his team ultimately fell short. Despite the setback, Castaneda has maintained solid statistics this season, averaging 11.6 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. It is worth noting that Castaneda is a naturalized Bosnian, bringing a diverse background to his professional basketball career in Spain.
#5. Bahamas Samuel Hunter, a 25-year-old forward standing at 6'9" who graduated from Akron in 2024 after aiding them to win the MAC Tournament that year, currently plays professionally in Austria. In a recent game, he played a pivotal role in BC Vienna's dominant 90-68 victory over the sixth-ranked Dukes, contributing 14 points in just 22 minutes of play. This impressive performance is noteworthy, especially considering that Hunter is only in his second season of professional basketball. BC Vienna, currently fourth in the Places 1-6 group with an 18-12 record, is benefitting from Hunter's skills in his first year with the team.
Hunter continued to shine in another game against Klosterneuburg, tallying 14 points and 1 rebound to help secure the victory and lead his team to be crowned the champion. With an average of 7.2 points per game and 3.6 rebounds per game, he ranks as the third-best in the league in terms of rebounding. Hunter's impact on BC Vienna's success this season is undeniable, showcasing his potential to become a formidable champion in the Austrian Win2Day Basketball Superliga.
#6. Maishe Dailey, a 6'7'' guard and 28-year-old Zips alumnus from 2021, currently playing professionally in Slovakia, gave a commendable performance in the game last Tuesday. Despite his efforts, Iskra Svit (15-21) was defeated 99-86 on their home court in Svit by the higher-ranked Slovan (#3). Dailey showcased his skills by scoring 14 points, securing 6 rebounds, and providing 2 assists in 35 minutes of play.
Despite Dailey's impressive performance, Iskra Svit couldn't secure a victory against Slovan. Throughout the season, Dailey has maintained relatively good statistics, averaging 11.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game.
#7. Greg Tribble, a 6'1'' guard who graduated from Akron in 2024, has been making his mark in professional basketball in Slovenia. Recently, he played a crucial role in Terme Olimia's narrow 79-78 victory over Zlatorog in the Slovenian Liga OTP banka. Tribble's contribution to the game was significant, as he scored 10 points, grabbed 1 rebound, and provided 2 assists in 27 minutes of play. His stellar performance not only helped his team emerge victorious but also demonstrated his skills and determination on the court, further solidifying his status as a champion. Throughout the season, Tribble has been averaging 8.8 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game, showcasing his consistency and value to his team.
#8. South Sudanese player Deng Riak, a 6'10'' center/forward who is 30 years old and an alumnus of Zips since 2020, assisted his team in winning the MAC East Division Regular Season Champion that year. Currently playing professionally in Australia, he recently played for Geelong United, but despite his strong performance, his team, ranked 16th, was defeated 104-91 by the Diamond Valley Eagles, who are ranked 13th in the South group. In the game, Riak showcased his skills by scoring 11 points, grabbing 7 rebounds, and contributing 1 assist in 34 minutes of play.
Even though Geelong United did not emerge as the finalist in this particular game, Riak demonstrated the qualities of a true champion through his individual performance. Throughout the season, he has maintained good statistics with an average of 11.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. It is interesting to note that Riak holds dual citizenship in America and South Sudan, allowing him the flexibility to play in South Sudan as a domestic player.
#9. Mikal Dawson, a 6'5'' guard who is 26 years old and a graduate of Marshall University in 2025, previously played for Akron between 2019 and 2024, where he notably contributed to their MAC Tournament victory in his final year. Currently playing professionally in Germany, Dawson recently played a key role in PS Karlsruhe Lions' triumph over the fourth-ranked Eisbaeren Bremerhaven with a close score of 86-83 in the German BARMER 2. Basketball Bundesliga ProA on a Saturday night. In the game, he showcased his skills by scoring 5 points in 18 minutes, alongside securing 2 rebounds and providing 2 assists, ultimately aiding his team in claiming the championship title. Throughout the season, Dawson has maintained an average of 3.2 points per game and 1.4 rebounds per game.
#10. Experienced champion Demetrius Treadwell, a 6'7'' forward who is 34 years old and an alumnus of Zips from 2015, currently plays professionally in Israel. Despite his best efforts, Treadwell could not lead E.Shomron to victory against M. Petah Tikva. In the game, he showcased his skills by scoring 8 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, dishing out 9 assists, and blocking 2 shots in 37 minutes of play, but unfortunately, his team was defeated 89-81.
