SDSU Reaches NCAA Tournament with 67-59 Win - Mar 9, 2016
South Dakota State won its third Summit League Men's Basketball Tournament championship in five years with a 67-59 victory over North Dakota State Tuesday night. The victory gives SDSU, 26-7, the Summit League's automatic qualifier berth in the NCAA Division I tournament. The Jacks won league titles in 2012 and 2013 while NDSU was the two-time defending champion after beating SDSU 57-56 in last year's final. The Bison are now 20-13. The title game drew 10,188 fans giving the four day even a combined (men and women) a tournament record 65,533 in attendance. The game was tied six times in the first half with eight lead changes. After Mike Daum (6'9''-F) gave SDSU the lead at 24-23 with a pair of free throws, Ian Theisen (6'9''-F) and Keaton Moffitt (6'5''-G-92) hit three pointers for the Jacks but Carlin Dupree (6'3''-G-95) countered with a pair of treys for the Bison, the second at the buzzer, and SDSU led 30-29 at halftime. NDSU took its last lead of the game at 40-39 on a basket by Paul Miller (6'4''-G-96). SDSU came right back with a jumper by Moffitt to regain the lead, then went on a 9-2 run which included back-to-back baskets by Deandre Parks, giving SDSU a 50-42 lead. The margin grew to 11 when Parks nailed a three pointer for a 59-48 spread with 4:08 to play. NDSU got back within five, on a pair of free throws by Dupree with 2:41 to go, but the Jacks maintained a two possession lead the rest of the way, wrapping it up with a pair of free throws by George Marshall with 13 seconds left. SDSU put four players in double figures, led by Daum with 18 points and a team high nine rebounds. Parks scored 14, Moffitt 11 (he hit 5 of 6 field goal tries) and Marshall scored 10. Dupree led NDSU with 19 points and Khy Kabellis (6'3''-G-96) scored 17. SDSU shot 40 per cent for the game, 22 of 55, and fashioned a 39-26 rebounding advantage. NDSU shot 42.9 percent, 21 of 49.
