Ben Woodside (5'11''-G-85) jumper with four seconds left lifted North Dakota State to a 66-64 victory over Oakland in the championship game of the 2009 Summit League men's basketball tournament Tuesday night.
North Dakota State rallied from a 12-point deficit in the last nine minutes to earn The Summit League's automatic qualifier spot in the NCAA tournament in its first season of Division I eligibility. The Bison also won The Summit League regular season title and are 26-6.
With 6-9 sophomore Will Hudson hitting four field goals and a free throw, Oakland opened a ten-point lead in the first five minutes of the game and led 43-33 at intermission thanks in part to shooting 62.5 percent from the field (20-32). Although the Golden Grizzlies shot just 32 percent in the second half (8-25), they managed to stay on top, leading 60-48 following a three-point basket by Erik Kangas (6'3''-G-87).
Sophomore forward Michael Tveidt (6'7''-F-87), NDSU's only non-senior starter, led the comeback. His three-pointer at 6:27 cut the margin to 60-55, and his fourth trey of the game in as many attempts gave the Bison the lead at 64-62 with 1:27 to go.
Oakland tied the game on a dunk by Keith Benson (6'11''-C-88) with 11 seconds left before Woodside scored on a jumper from the free throw line. Oakland had one last shot, but a three-point try by Johnathon Jones (5'11''-G-88) was off the mark.
Tveidt led all scorers with 21 points, hitting 8-of-11 field goal attempts. Woodside finished with 17, while Brett Winkelman (6'6''-F-86) had nine points and 10 rebounds.
Hudson and Kangas paced Oakland with 16 points each, Jones added 15 and Benson had a 14-point, 14 rebound double-double for the Golden Grizzlies.
NDSU won the rebound battle 35-33 and shot 41.9 percent (26-62) from the field. The Bison were 8-for-10 at the foul line while Oakland was 4-for-8.
Oakland, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, ends its season with a 22-12 record.
The NCAA Tournament selection show will air Sunday, March 15 at 6 p.m. ET on CBS.
