No. 6 Wofford wins the SoCon Tournament title-Mar 12, 2025
Five Terriers scored in double figures, securing a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. Hot shooting from three-point range in the second half helped No. 6 seed Wofford to a 92-85 win over No. 5 Furman in the Ingles Southern Conference Men's Basketball Championship game on Monday night at Harrah's Cherokee Center - Asheville. Jackson Sivills (6'6''-G-2001) made his fourth and final 3-pointer of the night with 1:26 remaining, giving the Terriers the lead for good, 84-83. From there Wofford did the remainder of its scoring from the free-throw line, converting on eight straight for its sixth SoCon tournament title and first since 2019. The Terriers made 8-of-13 three-point attempts in the second half when they outscored the Paladins 55-46. Wofford held a 77-69 lead with 6:53 remaining but Furman went on a 14-2 run for an 83-79 advantage with 2:34 left in regulation. Wofford's Kyler Filewich (6'9''-C-2001), the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, scored on a layup with 1:49 remaining to cut the deficit to 83-81 before Sivills' big shot. The Terriers finished 14-of-28 for the game on shots beyond the arc. Furman was 8-of-16 in the first half but cooled off in the second half, making just 5-of-17 to finish 13-of-33. Wofford made 13-of-19 field goals overall for a blistering 68.4 percent in the second half. They finished the game 26-of-48 (54.2 percent). Furman was 27-of-56 overall (48.2 percent). Furman made 42 three-pointers in its three games, one off the record of 43 by Chattanooga in the 2023 tournament. The Mocs, though, set the mark in four games. Wofford finished this year's tournament with 37 made 3-pointers. Sivills led Wofford in scoring with 20 points. Justin Bailey (6'3''-G) contributed 19, Dillon Bailey (6'3''-G-2001) 15, Filewich 13 and Corey Tripp 11. Furman also had five players in double figures led by PJay Smith (6'0''-PG)'s 27. Others in double figures were Nick Anderson (15); Garrett Hien 13; Charles Johnston (6'11''-F) (12); and Cooper Bowser (6'11''-F) (11). Records: Wofford 19-15, Furman 25-9.
