Auburn overwhelms Florida to earn SEC championship-Mar 18, 2024
The 4-seed Tigers earn their first SEC Tournament title since 2019 and the third in program history with an 86-67 thumping of the 6-seed Gators.
Auburn brought defensive heat from the jump and then warmed up on offense in the second half to defeat Florida, 86-67, in the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament championship game.
The 4-seed Tigers earned their first SEC tourney title since 2019, and the third in program history.
The 6-seed Gators became big game for the hungry Tigers, who smothered their foes on defense throughout and lit them up from inside and out on offense in the second.
Johni Broome (6'10''-F-2002) led the Tigers, who shot 64 percent from the field in the second half, with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Denver Jones added 11 points and Chad Baker-Mazara (6'7''-G/F-2000) had 10, but the offensive attack was balanced. Nine Auburn players scored six or more points.
Despite eventually getting worn down by Auburn’s double-barreled attack in the second half, Florida rallied after initially overcoming the early loss of starting center Micah Handlogten (7'1''-C-2003).
Handlogten went down with what later was described by Florida officials as a left leg injury. Play was stopped for several minutes while Handlogten was stabilized and then lifted onto a stretcher and carried off the court. He then was transported to the Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville for further evaluation and treatment.
SEC Network’s Marty Smith reported on the ESPN television broadcast that Florida coach Todd Golden told him at halftime that Handlogten suffered a fractured left leg.
Zyon Pullin (6'4''-G) led Florida with 15 points, Walter Clayton Jr. (6'2''-G). added 23 and Tyrese Samuel (6'10''-F-2000) 12. Thomas Haugh (6'9''-PF) came off the bench to provide a much-needed spark late in the first half and added 11 points.
The Gators rallied late in the first half and early in the second, pulling within one at 45-44 on a 14-7 run just after intermission. But from there, it was pretty much all Auburn as the Tigers outscored them 41-23 the rest of the way.
