LAS VEGAS, Nev. - No. 2 seed Utah State punched its ticket to the program's first NCAA Tournament since 2011, winning the 2019 Air Force Reserve Mountain West Men's Basketball Championship over No. 4 seed San Diego State. 2019 Mountain West Player of the Year and Tournament MVP Sam Merrill (6'5''-G) led the Aggies with 24 points in the championship game, while 2019 Mountain West Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Neemias Queta (6'11''-C-99) added 17 points and eight rebounds. The Aggies surged ahead with a 13-0 run to start the second half, and held the Aztecs to just 25 points on 27 percent shooting in the second half. Utah State-San Diego State quick hitters below: Utah State wins the 2019 Air Force Reserve Mountain West Men's Basketball Championship and clinches the Conference's automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. This marks the first time since 2011 that Utah State has made the NCAA tournament. Today's win is the third-ever Mountain West championship for Utah State in any sport, and first-ever in men's basketball. This is the ninth time in 20 years that the No. 2 seed has won the Mountain West Men's Basketball Championship, more than twice as many as any other seed in tournament history. Utah State's junior guard Sam Merrill was named the 2019 Air Force Reserve Mountain West Men's Basketball Championship MVP. For the tournament, Merrill averaged 24.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game, while shooting 47.5 percent (19-of-40) from the field and 92.6 percent (25-of-27) from the free throw line. In the title game, Merrill registered his fifth-consecutive 20-point game with 24 points. On the year, Merrill now has 18 20-point games, and 27 in his career. 2019 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year Neemias Queta also earned all-tournament team honors, averaging 14.3 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game. Leading by just two points at half, the Aggies opened up the second half on a 13-0 run to seize control of the game. Utah State held San Diego State to just 25 points in the second half on 27 percent (10-of-37) shooting. Utah State is now 26-2 on the year when leading at the half. Overall, the Aggies have won 10-straight games, and 17 of their last 18 overall. San Diego State's senior guard Devin Watson (6'1''-G-95) led the Aztecs with 18 points, with all five of his made field goals coming from behind the arc.
