Saint Peter's Wins 2022 Hercules Tires MAAC Championship on Saturday - Mar 12, 2022
No. 2 Saint Peter's University claimed the 2022 Hercules Tires Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men's Basketball Championship title on Saturday evening at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, defeating New Jersey rival No. 4 Monmouth University, 60-54.Saint Peter's stayed true to form, using its defense to guide them to the championship victory over Monmouth. The Peacocks, which were only surrendering 62 points per game, held a Hawk unit that ranked fourth in the conference in scoring, to just 54 points. Saint Peter's held Monmouth to 23.5 percent shooting from the field and 15.8 percent from three-point range, which included limiting them to a 0-for-9 shooting performance from deep in the second half. The Peacocks never trailed in the second half of the game and held a lead on the scoreboard for a little over 30 minutes. The largest discrepancy on the stat sheet was bench points, where Saint Peter's bench outscored Monmouth's reserves 31-8. Doug Edert (6'2''-G-2000) led all-scorers with a game-high 20 points, while Daryl Banks III (6'3''-G-2000) and Matthew Lee each scored eight. Monmouth's top scorers were Walker Miller (6'10''-F), with 15 points, Shavar Reynolds Jr. (6'2''-G-1998), scoring 12 points, and Jarvis Vaughan (6'9''-F), contributing 10 points. This is Saint Peter's fourth MAAC Championship title, the first for the program since 2011. KC Ndefo (6'7''-F-2000) was named as the championship MVP. Joining him on the MAAC All-Championship Team was Peacock teammates Edert and Lee. Also making the squad was Miller and Reynolds from Monmouth, Jacob Rigoni (6'6''-F-1998) of Quinnipiac and Rider's Dwight Murray Jr. (6'0''-PG-2000).
