North Texas Takes C-USA MBB Championship in OT, 61-57 - Mar 14, 2021
North Texas jumped out to a 17-0 lead to begin the game but would need overtime to defeat WKU, 61-57 and win the championship of the 2021 Air Force Reserve C-USA Men's Basketball Championship presented by Baylor Scott & White Medical Center.
Following the 17-0 start over the first 5:54 of the game, the Mean Green would take a 34-23 advantage to halftime. UNT's starting five would combined for 32 of the 34 points, with Javion Hamlet (6'4''-G) leading the way with 12.
In the second half, WKU used a 13-0 scoring run while holding North Texas without a field goal from 15:16 to 6:36 (a period of 8:40) to erase a 10-point deficit and take the lead. Basses scored nine of the 13 points as the Toppers took a three-point advantage.
But, North Texas had one more run in them in regulation. The Mean Green held WKU off the scoreboard for the final 2:57, scoring the final seven points of the regular session to set up overtime. The tying points came on a 3-pointer by Mardrez McBride (6'3''-G) with 22 seconds left off a beautiful feed from Hamlet to knot it up at 48-48.
The overtime period saw the offenses crank back up for the first time tonight and it also saw three ties and three lead changes. Appropriately, it was a jumper by Hamlet in the paint with 13 seconds remaining that would provide the winning points as UNT took a 59-57 lead. A pair of free throws by James Reese (6'4''-G-98) with two seconds left would seal it and the Mean Green could begin making their plans for Indianapolis.
Hamlet was named Most Valuable Player of the C-USA Championship. He led all scorers tonight with 20 points, four rebounds and five assists. Hamlet set a new single tournament record with 29 assists (7.3 per game), while averaging 18.5 points and 6.5 rebounds.
Mardrez McBride added 13 points for North Texas, connecting on a trio of 3-pointers for the second straight night. Zachary Simmons (6'10''-F) added 12 points and five rebounds.
The Mean Green's run to a championship title was certainly helped by their ability to ply defense. UNT allowed an average of 54.0 points in its four wins this week to be crowned champions.
Josh Anderson scored a team-high 14 points and Charles Basses added 13 points and 11 rebounds for WKU (20-7).
The Mean Green became the fifth team in C-USA Championship history to win four games in four days to be crowned champion. Houston was the last school to accomplish the feat back in 2010.
