Memphis wins 2011 Buick Conference USA Championship

Memphis did not hold a lead until the final seven seconds of the game, but Joe Jackson (6'0''-G)'s two free throws at that time proved to be the difference in the contest as the Tigers pulled out a 67-66 win over UTEP to win the 2011 Buick Conference USA Men's Basketball Championship. The title is the fifth in the last six years for Memphis (25-9), who earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
Jackson was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, scoring 17 points off the bench one day after pouring in a career-high 24 in the semifinal victory over East Carolina. In addition to his 17 points, he dished out seven assists and grabbed two rebounds.
Chris Crawford (6'4''-G) scored all 15 of his points on three-pointers, connecting on 5-of-6 attempts from beyond the arc. Tarik Black (6'8''-F) notched a double-double for the Tigers, scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 boards.
UTEP (25-9) led by as many as 13 points early in the second half and the score was tied four times, but the Miners only trailed in the final seven seconds. The Miners had an opportunity to win the game in the final seconds, but Christian Polk (6'3''-G-87)'s jumper hit the front of the rim and fell short.
Polk led all scorers with 27 points, two shy of the C-USA Championship Game record. He hit 8 of his first 9 shots and finished the game 11-of-14 from the field. Polk was the only Miner to reach double-figure scoring, as Jeremy Williams (6'7''-F-87) and Claude Britten (6'11''-C-88) added eight apiece.
Julyan Stone (6'6''-G-88) had a game-high 11 rebounds and dished out seven assists for UTEP, which fell in the C-USA Championship Game for the second year in a row.
The one-point margin of victory marked the third time in the 16-year history of the tournament that the final game was decided by a single point.
