Purdue Wins 2023 Big Ten Championship-Mar 13, 2023
CHICAGO, Ill. - The Purdue University Boilermakers won their second Big Ten Men's Tournament Championship on Sunday, as they topped Penn State 67-65 at the United Center in Chicago.
With the win, Purdue (29-5) earns the will receive the Big Ten's automatic berth into the 2023 NCAA Championship and make its 34th all-time tournament appearance. Purdue also claimed the regular season title, becoming the third team in the last 10 years to win both the regular season and tournament titles. The previous two teams that won both championships advanced to the Final Four (2019 Michigan State and 2015 Wisconsin). Junior Zach Edey (7'4''-C-2002) led the Boilermakers with 30 points on 12-17 shooting from the field and 13 rebounds, both game highs, in just 28 minutes of action. Edey's effort were rewarded as the media named him the tournament's Jim and Kitty Delany Most Outstanding Player. Edey was joined on the Big Ten Men's Basketball All-Tournament Team by Jalen Pickett (6'4''-G) and Seth Lundy (6'6''-G/F-2000) from Penn State, Indiana's Trayce Jackson-Davis (6'9''-F-2000), and Bruce Thornton (6'2''-G) from Ohio State. After trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half, the Nittany Lions used a 7-0 spurt to pull within 40-36 after a Camren Wynter (6'2''-G) three pointer at the 16:28 mark. Purdue responded with a 12-2 run of its own, as Trey Kaufman-Renn's three-point play extended the Boilermakers' advantage to 52-38 with 10:10 to play. Purdue pushed its lead to a game-high 17 points with 6:18 on the clock, but Penn State would not go away. The Nittany Lions used a 17-4 run to cut their deficit to 64-60 with just under two minutes to play. An Edey lay-up gave Purdue a six point cushion, but Pickett found teammate Myles Dread (6'4''-G/F-1999) for a three with 16 seconds remaining, cutting Penn State's deficit to three. The Nittany Lions forced a turnover on Purdue's next possession, leading to a Wynter lay-up to pull Penn State to within 66-65 with six seconds to play. On the next possession, a Penn State foul sent Purdue's Fletcher Loyer (6'4''-G) to the free throw line, where he made one-of-two. Penn State's Andrew Funk (6'5''-G-1999) collected the defensive rebound, but, after a timeout, the Nittany Lions could not get a game-winning shot attempt. David Jenkins Jr. (6'1''-G-1998) added 11 points, while Mason Gillis (6'6''-F-2000) added 10 points for the Boilermakers. Lundy Paced the Nittany Lions with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Wynter finished with 14 points and Pickett 11. Courtesy of bigten.org All-Big Ten Awards 2023-Mar 13, 2023
