Bears Headed To First Dance

In just its fourth season as a full Division I member, and its fifth in the Big Sky Conference, Northern Colorado is going to the NCAA men's basketball tournament.
The Bears clinched their automatic bid with a 65-60 win over defending champion Montana in front of 3,182 fans at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion in Greeley in the 2011 Banner Health Big Sky Conference Championship.
Northern Colorado (21-10) will learn its NCAA opponent on Sunday when the 68-team field is announced on CBS at 4 p.m. Mountain.
Senior league MVP Devon Beitzel scored a game-high 27 points, hitting 14-of-17 from the free-throw line and 3-of-8 from 3-point range to lead the Bears. Beitzel was named the tournament's MVP.
The game was tied at the half 31-31. Northern Colorado shot 55.6 percent from 3-point range in the second half and 50 percent from the field. Montana struggled with foul trouble, as Derek Selvig, Will Cherry and Jordan Wood all fouled out.
Art Steward let Montana with 16 points. Will Cherry and Kareem Jamar each had 13. Montana is now 21-10.
