Senior guard Jeremiah Dominguez (5'6''-G-85) scored 22 points and Julius Thomas (6'5''-F-88) slammed down the game-winning basket with 3.5 seconds left as the Portland State Vikings captured their second straight Big Sky Conference men's basketball championship with a 79-77 victory over Montana State on Wednesday night.
Portland State (22-9) will take a six-game winning streak into the NCAA Tournament. The Vikings will find out their opponent on Sunday on CBS at 4 p.m. Mountain.
'We beat an impressive team in Montana State,'' said Portland State coach Ken Bone . 'He and his guys did an outstanding job at the end of the season. I was extremely impressed with the way they played, not just tonight but the last week.'' Montana State entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed and riding a five-game losing streak. The Bobcats (14-17) upset No. 3 seed Montana 56-54 in Missoula in a first-round game, and then stunned top-seeded Weber State 70-61 in a semifinal on Monday.
'These guys battled, they competed, they did everything they had to do have a chance a chance at the end and that's all you can ask of them,'' said Montana State coach Brad Huse. 'I just really feel bad they didn't get to reach the dream. That was a heck of a three-game stretch for these guys. It's just so disappointing that we didn't have one more basket. Montana State's Branden Johnson (6'8''-F-86) tied the game at 77-77 with a 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play. Portland State came right back down the floor. Dominic Waters (6'1'') drove down the lane, and dished to a wide-open Thomas who slammed home the deciding basket.
Dominguez was named the tournament MVP. He was joined on the All-Tournament team by Andre Murray (6'2''-G), who had 21 points in PSU's semifinal victory, and Thomas, who tallied 17 points with five rebounds in the championship game. Johnson, Divaldo MBunga (6'9'') and Will Bynum (6'3''-G) were selected from Montana State. Mbunga, a senior center, scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds, his second straight double-double.
