VCU Wins Third A-10 Championship With 68-63 Victory Over George Mason-Mar 19, 2025
Max Shulga (6'5''-G-2002) scored 18 points and Joe Bamisile (6'4''-G) sealed the win with two free throws with a half-second left as Virginia Commonwealth held off George Mason 66-63 to win the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament championship Sunday. VCU led by eight at the break, 36-28, but George Mason got back-to-back 3-pointers from Jared Billups (6'4''-G) and Woody Newton (6'9''-G/F-2001) to trail by just two, 45-43 with more than 12 minutes to play. Shulga answered with a 3 and hit a pair of free throws before finding Jack Clark (6'10''-F-2000) for a 3 to push the VCU lead to 53-43. Darius Maddox hit a 3 with 2:27 left to get the Patriots within one at 59-58. Coming out of a timeout, Shulga held the ball at the top of the key, then calmly knocked down a step-back 3 with 1:59 left. Jalen Haynes' layup with 39 seconds left got George Mason within 3 but Zachary Anderson (6'7''-F-2002, college: FGCU) missed a 3-pointer with :04 left and Newton was forced to foul Bamisile with a half-second left. Bamisile and Jack Clark each scored 17 points for VCU (28-6). Shulga, the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, hit 8 of 9 from the line as the Rams converted 22 of 27. Haynes led George Mason (26-8) with 17 points and eight rebounds. Maddox had 12 points to go with three steals and Anderson and Brayden O'Connor (6'4''-G) each added 10 points. Virginia Commonwealth and George Mason finished the regular season tied for the regular season championship with 15-3 records. The Rams reached the conference championship game for the ninth time since joining the A-10 in 2012-13. ![]() Max Shulga, 22-year old Ukrainian guard from the Virginia Commonwealth University, earned the All-Tournament MVP at the NCAA Division I.
He received multiple other awards, picked up the Player of the Year, and earned a spot in the First Team and Tournament Team.
With Shulga's excellent performance, the Virginia Commonwealth University achieved the best record of the season in the league, finishing with an impressive 27 to 6 in the regular season.
Shulga was previously named the Tournament Finalist, and voted to the First Team and Tournament Team last year.
He averaged almost 15 points and 6 rebounds per game in the league.

Reed Bailey, 22-year old forward from the Davidson Wildcats, was voted the Most Improved Player of the Year of NCAA Division I.

He has totalled 13 games of 20 or more points and notched double-doubles in 3 games on the year.
Brown's 27 points against the Fordham were the most he scored in the 24 25 season.
He was selected to the All-Philadelphia Catholic Second Team as well as the All-State Third Team back in 2021.
Rasheer Fleming, 20-year old forward from the Saint Joseph's University, was voted to the First Team at the NCAA Division I.
He was previously honored as the Tournament Semifinals last year.
Fleming recorded almost 15 points and 9 rebounds per game that season in the league.
He has totalled 5 games of 20 or more points and registered double-doubles in 8 games on the year.
Fleming's 26 points against Charleston were the most he scored in the 24 25 season.
Gibson Jimerson, 25-year old guard from the Saint Louis University, was selected to the First Team of NCAA Division I.
He was also chosen to the Rookie Team.
Jimerson was previously named to the All-Academic Team four times, Tournament Semifinals three times in the past and Third Team back in 2022 and 2024, Regular Season Co-Runner-Up and Second Team back in 2023.
He had almost 18 points and 5 rebounds per game over the season in the league.
Jimerson has totalled 15 games of 20 or more points on the year and recorded 30 or more points in 3 games.
His 35 points against the Duquesne were the most he scored in the 24 25 season.
Among many awards Jimerson's team was the regular season runner-up in the Atlantic 10 in 2023.
He was selected to the NABC Division I All-District 4 Second Team back in 2022.
Jimerson was also selected to the All-Atlantic 10 Third Team between 2022 and 2024.
