Rangers win first RMAC Tournament Championship in program history - Mar 4, 2018
The Regis University men's basketball team made history on Saturday night, winning the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament Championship in men's basketball history. The No. 2 seeded Regis Rangers (26-5) beat the overall No. 1 seeded Fort Lewis College Skyhawks (24-6) 88-80 on their home floor. How It Happened: The first half featured a back-and-forth battle between the top two teams in the conference. Only two points separated the Rangers and the Skyhawks at the halftime break with RU leading 42-40. Junior Jarrett Brodbeck (6'4''-G) picked up right where he left off from the night before, lighting up the scoreboard for 15 points in 18 minutes during the first half. FLC fought their way back into the game, taking a 65-62 lead with 7:48 to go in the game. With their backs against the wall, Regis responded with 19-7 run that not only gave them the lead but also gave them their largest lead of the game 81-72 at that time. The Skyhawks cut the lead to six points with a minute to go, but all the Rangers had to do was knock down their free-throws from that point on. RU did exactly that as they put the game away 88-80 as the horn sounded, winning their first-ever RMAC Tournament Championship in school history. Game Notes: Brodbeck was named the RMAC Tournament Most Valuable Player as he poured in 27 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field. The sharpshooter splashed five three-pointers in the game and went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Senior Ty McGee (6'5''-F) (8-14 FG, 4-5 FT) notched his second consecutive 21-point performance after doing so in the semifinal game against the Colorado School of Mines. Sophomore Christian Little (6'2''-G-98) (5-14 FG, 6-7 FT, 3 STL) added 17 points in the game as he and McGee were both named to the All-Tournament Team. Senior Dexter Sienko (6'6''-F) (3-5 FG) tallied six points, six rebounds, three blocks and a team-high four assists in the game. Junior Avonte Nelms (6'5''-G) had 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds to go along with two assists and three steals on the night. Regis shot 42 percent from the field, 37 percent from beyond the arc, and most importantly 20-of-23 (87 percent) from the free-throw line, their second-best mark of the season. The Rangers outrebounded FLC 42-39, forcing 15 turnovers and committing only 11 of their own.
