Vulcans capture championship in final seconds-Mar 9, 2026
California wins first conference title since 2008, earns automatic berth; Lucas chosen Tournament MVP Trailing by two points with 2.1 seconds left, sophomore Jordyn Buchanan (6'5''-G) converted three free-throws to lift the Vulcans to an 80-79 victory over host Gannon in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Highmark Events Center. With the win, the California (PA) men's basketball team improves to 22-8 overall and secures an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Vulcans captured their first conference title since 2008 and the ninth in program history. Meanwhile, Gannon falls to 28-3 season with two of its three losses coming against Cal. The Vulcans became the first team to defeat the Golden Knights at home since Feb. 25, 2023. Redshirt junior Bryson Lucas (6'7''-F) was named the Most Valuable Player of the PSAC Tournament. He finished with 11 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, one block and three steals against the Golden Knights on Sunday. Over the weekend, Lucas registered a combined 31 points, 24 rebounds, eight assists, two blocks and seven steals. Additionally, the West Virginia native became the No. 28 player in program history to eclipse 500 points in a season. Buchanan led the team with 17 points behind 8-of-10 from the free-throw line despite being limited to six minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. Junior Joshua Ray (6'6''-F) added 10 points and four rebounds off the bench, while senior Brayden Reynolds (6'3''-G) finished with 12 points, two rebounds, four assists and two steals. Sophomore Keondre DeShields (6'3''-G) scored 13 points off the bench and redshirt sophomore Antoine Arnett (6'7''-F) collected 11 points and six rebounds while battling foul trouble early in the second half. Cal held a 6-5 lead at the initial media timeout as the teams shot a combined 5-for-15 from the floor through the 15:27-mark. The Golden Knights then mounted an 11-6 run to claim a 16-12 lead with 12:26 left in the first half. Buchanan was forced to the bench with over 13 minutes remaining before the break with two fouls. Cal pulled within one point at 23-22 at the 9:01-mark before the teams combined for only six points over the next three-plus minutes. The Vulcans snapped a nearly two-minute scoreless drought on a dunk by Lucas to pull within one point, 25-24. The Golden Knights later closed the half on an 11-5 rally to take a 42-35 lead at the break. The Vulcans prevented Gannon from making a field goal for the opening five minutes of the second half and cut the deficit to two points, 44-42. By the initial media timeout. Arnett was whistled for a pair of fouls and forced to the bench just over 30 seconds into the second half. The Golden Knights stretched the lead to six points, 51-45, before the Vulcans mounted a 10-3 run to claim a 55-54 lead on a dunk by DeShields with 9:20 remaining. Gannon countered with an 11-4 rally, which featured Arnett being whistled for his fourth foul, to take a 65-59 lead at the 6:09-mark. The Vulcans later responded with a 10-4 run to tie the score at 73-73 on a layup by Reynolds with 1:55 left to play. Trailing 78-77, Cal forced a shot clock violation with 11.3 seconds remaining in regulation and called a timeout following a video review. The Vulcans advanced the ball across midcourt and lost possession before being forced to foul with 3.6 seconds left. Gannon made one of two attempts at the line to take a 79-77 lead. Reynolds, positioned underneath the basket on the inbounds, threw the ball to a leaping Lucas past midcourt, who flipped to Buchanan racing down the sideline for a three-point attempt and was fouled on the shot. The Golden Knights missed a last-second attempt from over midcourt as time expired. Cal finished the game shooting 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the floor and converted 21-of-26 (80.8 percent) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Gannon posted a.371 field-goal percentage while going 8-of-33 (24.2 percent) from long range.
