No. 25 Lakers Claim GLIAC Tournament Championship with Win at No. 17 Northern Michigan-Mar 9, 2026
The No. 25 Grand Valley State men's basketball team claimed the GLIAC tournament championship for the eighth time in program history after defeating No. 17 Northern Michigan 67-57 Sunday (Mar. 8) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 25-6 on the season and have punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
Mason Docks (6'0''-G) and Jalen Charity (6'7''-F) led GVSU in scoring with 13 points each. Chairty grabbed five rebounds and Docks swiped three steals. Antaune Allen (6'2''-G) scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds on 5-13 shooting from the field. David Wilkerson (6'4''-G) added 11 points and two rebounds on 4-7 shooting from the field. Ethan Alderink (6'7''-F) put up eight points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the win.
GVSU shot 38% from the field while Northern Michigan shot 39% from the floor and 23% from three. Northern Michigan outrebounded the Lakers 42-33 while both teams grabbed 11 offensive rebounds. The Lakers outscored the Wildcats 34-28 in the paint and 12-9 in second chance points.
The Lakers got off to a quick 7-3 start with a three-pointer by Ethan Alderink and buckets by Antaune Allen and Shamus Thompson (6'10''-F). Northern Michigan would tie the game at 7-7 but Mason Docks had a quick answer with a three to put GVSU back in front. GVSU would go on a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the half at 19-12 with just under 11 minutes. Allen would score seven straight points for GVSU to put them up double digits at 24-14 with under 10 minutes left in the opening half. The Lakers would increase the lead to 16 off back-to-back steals and layups from Wilkerson and Docks. The Wildcats would make a late run at the end of the first half as GVSU would take a 10-pont lead into the break.
In the second half, Northern Michigan cut the lead to six with under 16 minutes to go. GVSU would answer with a 13-0 run to take a 19-point lead off an and one from Charity. NMU answered with an 11-0 run to cut the lead down to seven points with just over four minutes to play. Charity would hit back-to-back layups late to help GVSU maintain an eight-point lead as GVSU would get crucial stops down the stretch to close it out.

Dylan Kuehl, forward from the Northern Michigan University, was honored as the Player of the Year at the NCAA Division II. He received multiple other awards, earned the Defensive Player of the Year, and was named to the First Team, Defensive Team and Tournament Team. With Kuehl's excellent performance, the Northern Michigan University achieved the best record of the season in the league, finishing with an impressive 27 to 5 in the regular season. Kuehl averaged almost 23 points and 6 rebounds per game in the league. He has totalled 11 games of 20 or more points on the year and recorded 30 or more points in 4 games. Kuehl registered double-doubles in 2 games during the event. His 41 points against the Parkside were the most he scored in the 25 26 season. Among many awards Kuehl's team won the GLIAC Tournament in 2023 and 2025.
Ethan Alderink, forward from the Grand Valley State University, earned a spot in the First Team of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. He had over 14 points and almost 6 rebounds per game that season in the league. Alderink's 28 points against the Lewis were the most he scored in the 25 26 season. Among many awards he played in the final of the GLIAC Tournament in 2024. He was selected to the All-GLIAC Second Team in 2024.
Mykel Bingham, forward from the Ferris State University, was voted to the First Team at the NCAA Division II. He was also selected to the Defensive Team. Bingham recorded over 13 points and 6 rebounds per game over the season in the league. His 26 points against the Wayne State University were the most he scored in the 25 26 season. Bingham's team was the regular season runner-up in the GLIAC in 2023.
Jordan Briggs, guard from the Wayne State University, was chosen to the First Team of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
