Buffs Claim 5th Straight LSC Championship Title - Mar 8, 2022
The start of the season looked very different for West Texas A&M, which had four different starters from last year's team. But the end of the year looks exactly the same as recent history - the Buffs are cutting down the nets in the conference tournament. West Texas A&M (28-6) claimed it fifth straight and 11th overall LSC Championship on Sunday with a 77-70 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville at Comerica Center. The No. 2 seeded Buffs were in control from start to finish, but needed to hold off a gritty Kingsville team, the No. 12 seed that became the lowest seed in conference history to reach the final game. Like he's done all weekend, WT guard Julius Brown (5'11''-PG-1999) led the way for Buffs, scoring 20 points with six assists, five rebounds and two steals. Brown scored 76 points in the three games and was named tournament MVP. Joining Brown on the all-tournament team for the Buffs was Zach Toussaint (5'10''-PG-2000), who had 19 points on Sunday. This was the second straight year Toussaint made the all-tournament team. Also, Hayden Blankley (6'6''-G) made the team, thanks to his third straight double-figures game with 12 points off the bench. For Texas A&M-Kingsville, who played their fourth game of the tournament, Jordan Wilson (6'4''-G) (12 points) and Dayante McClellan (6'6''-F) (six points, eight rebounds) landed spots on the all-tournament team. Creighton Avery (5'10''-PG), who also had a strong tournament run, had 17 points off the bench for the Javelinas. TAMUK was looking to knock off its fourth Top 5 seed of the tournament after beating No. 5 Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday, No. 4 St. Mary's on Thursday and then No. 1 Lubbock Christian on Saturday in stunning fashion. But they couldn't overcome a red-hot West Texas A&M squad that has now won eight straight games by an average of 21 points. And that included just a seven-point win over the Javelinas, the closest game here in this winning stretch for the Buffs. But for the most part, the final score was closer than the game as WT led by 15 with 2:21 to play. An 11-3 run by a Javelinas group that never stopped playing, made the final score just a seven-point game. West Texas A&M Notes: WT made history in 2021 becoming the first team to win four straight LSC Championship, surpassing Abilene Christian (1985-87). But with five straight, the Buffs put their stamp as one of the best dynasties in conference history, if not the very best. WT has a conference best 11 tournament titles and improve to 11-5 in finals appearances. Julius Brown had only six 20+ scoring games in the regular season and never had three straight. But in Frisco, Brown scored 34, 22 and 20 points, giving him nine for the year and helped take home MVP honors for the tournament. Zach Toussaint joins former teammates Qua Grant (6'1''-G) and Joel Murray (6'0''-PG) as WT players to make the all-tournament team in consecutive years. Grant actually made the team three straight times (2019-21). Toussaint scored 32 points in the tournament and enters next week's regional needing 28 points to reach 1,000 for his career. Texas A&M-Kingsville Notes: The loss prevents A&M-Kingsville from claiming the school's first LSC Championship title since 1996. That year, current head coach Johnny Estelle was named MVP for the Javelinas. The 1996 game was also the last time Kingsville advanced to the finals. The loss Sunday to WT drops them to 2-6 in title games. TAMUK has won seven of its final nine games with both losses occurring to West Texas A&M. The Javelinas lost to WT 87-78 on Feb. 24. The Javelinas were looking to match a season-long five-game winning streak. But it would've been the most consecutive wins against LSC opponents. TAMUK won five straight non-conference games in November. Dayante McClellan and Jordan Wilson became the first two Javelinas to make the LSC all-tournament since 2006 when Will Brown made it. Brown also was on the 2004 all-tournament team.
