Grant Leads Buffs To 4th Straight LSC Tournament Championship - Mar 13, 2021
For the first time in Lone Star Conference history, we have a four-peat in the postseason tournament. West Texas A&M claimed its fourth straight LSC Tournament Championship title by defeating No. 8 seed St. Edward's 108-89 Saturday at First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas. Qua Grant (6'1''-G), who has been part of the last three championships for the Buffs, was named Tournament MVP. On Saturday, he led WT with an all-around performance with a career-high 34 points to go along with 12 rebounds and six assists. It was an entertaining game from start to finish, as both teams were lighting up the scoreboard as halftime approached. But leading by four, WT got a big 3-pointer by Grant to extend their halftime edge to 53-46. From there, the Buffs kept the Hilltoppers at bay throughout the second half. It wasn't just Grant making plays. Like he's been there all year, Joel Murray had a big game, scoring 20 points with six assists and four rebounds. Zach Toussaint (5'10''-PG-00) hit five 3-pointers to score 18 points. Jon'il Fugett (6'0''-PG-99) added 14 points, while Kavon Booker (6'6''-G) had a career-high 12 points and five rebounds and three blocks. Murray, who was last year's MVP of the 2020 tournament, joined Grant on this year's all-tournament team, along with Toussaint. The Buffs get the automatic bid to next week's regional tournament, which will be played in Lubbock. For the Hilltoppers, who made an impressive run in the tournament with two upsets, including knocking off top-seed LCU on Tuesday, the season is likely over considering they were unranked in the latest regional ranking. SEU had five players in double figures, led by Daniel Venzant (5'10''-PG), who had 25 points to earn a spot on the all-tournament. B.J. Maxwell (6'5''-F-97) scored 19 points as Jake Krafka (6'7''-F-98), who made the game-winning 3-pointer on Tuesday to beat LCU, had 14 points in the finals. Ryan Garza (6'0''-PG-98) scored 11 points, as did Logan Cook (6'8''-F-98).
WT Notes WT became the first team in LSC Championship history to win four straight tournament titles. WT also holds the conference lead with 10 tournament titles. The 108 points scored by WT are the most by a team in the LSC Championship finals since UCO had 121 in a win over the Buffs back in 1998. The Buffaloes outrebounded SEU 43-23. Grant had six other games this season with 25 points or more, but Saturday was his first 30-point game of the season.
SEU Notes The Hilltoppers are now 0-2 in the LSC Championship finals, losing the last two seasons to West Texas A&M. The 89 points scored by SEU is the fifth-most scored by a losing team in the finals. With a 4-2 record in LSC Championship play, the Hilltoppers have a winning percentage of .666, which ranks them third all-time
