ATU Wins Second Straight GSC Men's Baksetball Title
Arkansas Tech earned its second consecutive GSC Men's Basketball Championship, clipping Alabama-Huntsville, 64-63, at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Miss.
ATU guard Marcus Pillow (6'0''-G) drilled the go-ahead three-pointer with 14 seconds left to play and the Wonder Boys' defense closed the door on the game's last possession.
Arkansas Tech led comfortably throughout the contest, grabbing a 15-point advantage at 13:51 in the first half. ATU held an 11-point edge at the break and seemed to be on its way to victory leading by 12 with 4:02 on the clock, but the Chargers used an 11-0 run to grab a two-point lead with 32 seconds remaining. Freshman center Zane Campbell (6'7''-F) hit back-to-back three pointers, sparking Alabama-Huntsville's comeback. The Wonder Boys called a timeout after Campbell's final trey-bomb, setting up Pillow's three-point winner.
ATU became the first back-to-back GSC Title Winner since 2004-05 (Montevallo). The men's victory also marked the fourth time in league history that the same school has won both the men's and women's basketball crowns during the same season.
Arkansas Tech entered the Tournament ranked No. 1 in the South Region and expects to earn Regional hosting rights later tonight. UAH should also move on to the NCAA Tournament.
