It was a tournament of firsts for Arkansas Tech, and the biggest of them all occured today when the Wonder Boys defeated East Division champion Valdosta State 79-66 for the league title at the DeSoto Civic Center.
Arkansas Tech caputed its first ever GSC championship with the win, and are the automatic qualifier in the league for the NCAA Tournament. The Wonder Boys move to 22-8 on the year, while VSU drops to 24-6.
GSC Tournament Most Outstanding Player Renard Allen (6'1''-G) of ATU topped all scorers with 25 points. The guard also grabbed six rebounds and dished out two assists in 27 minutes of play. Arkansas Tech had five players in double digits, including all-tournament selections Thiago Cordeiro (6'10''-C-85) and Chad Henderson (6'2''-G). Tyrone Curnell (6'7''-F), who also was tabbed to the all-tourney team, lead VSU with 12 points.
Valdosta State got out of the gate quickly, shooting well and earning an early 21-13 margin on the strength of guard Ricardo Lewis (6'0''-G). Lewis, who was an all-touranment selection, finished the contest with eight points. After a strong run by Arkansas Tech to close out the half, head coach Brian Downey's bunch would go into the lockerrom ahead 35-33.
The second half would be all Tech, with ATU outscoring the Blazers 44-33. After shooting 41 percent (15-for-36) in the first stanza, the Wonder Boys caught fire, lighting it up at a 61 percent clip (14-for-23). Arkansas Tech opened the half with a 17-2 run, turning what was a close game into a sizable margin.
Despite VSU's best efforts, the Wonder Boys would not be denied. With the clock at zero, ATU stormed the court to celebrate the school's first ever GSC basketball title.
