Harding Men Collect GSC Tournament Title

Arkansas Tech had easily dispatched its two opponents in Gulf South Conference Tournament and was one win away from securing a third straight league title. Harding, though, had other ideas.
Using a second straight scintillating shooting performance, the Bisons dominated the Wonder Boys 80-61 to secure their first GSC Tournament title. The win gives Harding the league's automatic berth in the NCAA South Region field and avenged the two regular season losses suffered at the hands of Arkansas Tech.
Kevin Brown had a monster effort, making 7-of-8 shots en route to a 19-point, seven-rebound, five-blocked shot performance. As a team, Harding shot 58 percent from the field and scored half its points in the paint on an assortment of layups, dunks and short jumpers. The Bisons were even hot from beyond the 3-point arc, making 8-of-15 from downtown.
Arkansas Tech did not turn the ball over much (12 turnovers), but Harding turned those miscues into 22 points. The Wonder Boys' shooting left a little to be desired as well, making just 35 percent of their shots from the field.
Harding made nine of its first 12 shots to open a 20-10 lead less than nine minutes into the contest. A Matt Haney 3-pointer trimmed the lead to seven points but the Bisons would go on a 13-2 run over the next four minutes that gave HU its biggest lead of the first half, 33-15.
Down 39-26 at the half, Arkansas Tech made a last-ditch assault on the Harding advantage. The Wonder Boys cut the deficit to seven less than five minutes into the final period. But a 27-6 jaunt over a seven-minute span midway through the second half put the game out of reach. The Bisons led by as many as 25 in the second half.
Sam Brown scored 17 points, Hayden Johnson had 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists off the bench and tournament Most Outstanding Player Stephen Blake added 10 points. Jeremy Dunbar led Arkansas Tech with 14 points, James Causey added 13 and Jared Williamson finished with 12
