Lewis Upsets UW-Parkside For GLVC Title - Mar 7, 2016
No. 5 seed Lewis University captured the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Basketball Championship on Sunday with an 80-71 victory over third-seed and 14th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri. Lewis led by as much as 19 points and allowed UW-Parkside to tie things up on three separate occasions, but the Flyers never trailed once in the final contest en route to its sixth GLVC men's basketball championship and second at the league's postseason tournament. They are the third fifth-seed to win the crown and earn the Conference's automatic qualifying bid into the NCAA Division II national tournament, as the 64-team field will be revealed later this evening at 10:30 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. Thanks to a 54.3% (19-of-35) shooting clip in the first half, Lewis held a 15-point halftime lead. Parkside tried to muscle its way back into the game, and did come within two points at the 9:13 mark and again with 5:32 remaining, but the Flyers fended off the Rangers in the end after a late three-pointer and a pair of foul shots with under a minute remaining. Kyle Nelson (6'7''-C) netted a game-high 23 points and a contest-best 10 rebounds to lead the Flyers, while the tournament's Most Valuable Player Max Strus (6'6''-G) scored 17 with four rebounds, two assists and as many steals. Leading the Rangers was All-Tournament player Andy Mazurczak (6'2''-G), who scored 22 points, grabbed five boards and added three assists and a steal. Joining Strus and Mazurczak on the All-Tournament team was Lewis' Miles Simelton (6'1''-PG), UWP's Kendale McCullum (6'1''-PG) and Quincy University's Joseph Tagarelli (6'5''-F).
