Bellarmine Wins 2017 Deaconess GLVC Men's Basketball Championship Title - Mar 6, 2017
No. 1 seed and fourth-ranked Bellarmine University captured the 2017 Deaconess Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Basketball Championship crown on Sunday with a 74-61 victory over seventh-seed Lewis University at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana. The Knights used a 12-0 run over the final three minutes to win its fourth league trophy and the first since 2011. With the victory, Bellarmine earned the Conference's automatic qualifying bid into the NCAA Division II national tournament, as the 64-team field will be revealed later this evening at 11:00 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. Lewis led by as many as 11 points in the first half up until the 11:59 mark when Bellarmine began to chip away at the deficit to eventually pull ahead by one point entering halftime up 34-33. The Knights then extended their advantage to 14 by the 13:45 mark once Eberhard drilled his fifth three-pointer. The Flyers worked their way back to within one point on three separate occasions, including at 5:33 (58-57), 4:54 (60-59) and 3:20 (62-61), but could not gain the momentum to overtake Bellarmine's earlier advantage and ensuing run to the final 13-point win. Rusty Troutman (6'5''-G) led Bellarmine with a game-high 23 points, while Deaconess GLVC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Adam Eberhard (6'8''-F), pitched in 21 points and 11 rebounds with a shooting clip of 53.8 percent (7-for-13). Lewis' Cristen Wilson (6'5''-F) netted a team-high 21 points and added eight rebounds for the Flyers. The Knights shot 44.9 percent from the field and were nearly perfect from the line (87.0%), nailing 20 of their 23 attempts. Lewis hit 44.4 percent of its shots but only made it to the line eight times all game, finishing six. Bellarmine converted 14 Lewis turnovers into 27 points and also had the edge in points in the paint, 20 to 16. Troutman joined Eberhard on the All-Tournament team along with Lewis' Wilson and Delaney Blaylock, while Truman State University's Cory Myers rounded out the five-man squad.
