Southern Indiana Captures 2014 GLVC Men's Basketball Title - Mar 11, 2014
The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team captured the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Sunday with an 86-73 victory over Bellarmine University in the 2014 Deaconess GLVC Championship Tournament at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. The win marked the program's 12 GLVC title, drawing the Screaming Eagles just two championships shy of the league record of 14 held by Kentucky Wesleyan. Lawrence Thomas (5'9''-PG-91) finished the game with a season-high and game-high 23 points. He was followed in the scoring column by GLVC co-Player of the Year Aaron Nelson (6'8''-F), who had 22 points and 13 rebounds for his 23rd double-double of the season. Nelson also was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and to the All-Tournament team, joining Lawrence Thomas, Bellarmine's Vance Hall (6'4''-G-91) and Jake Thelen (6'6''-F), and Drury's Cameron Adams (6'5''-F-93). USI also had contributions from Orlando Rutledge (6'6''-F), who grabbed 18 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Bellarmine saw all five starters score in double figures, led by George Suggs (6'10''-F) with 14 points. Hall had 13 points, Keisten Jones (6'3''-G) netted 12, while Rusty Troutman (6'5''-G) and Jake Thelen had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Rusty Troutman also tallied 12 rebounds in the loss.
