 Drury Wins 2013 GLVC Men's Basketball Championship - Mar 11, 2013
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Drury University has been crowned the 2013 GLVC Men's Basketball Champion after winning the 2013 Deaconess GLVC Basketball Championship Tournament on Sunday afternoon with a 71-65 victory over the University of Southern Indiana. The top-seeded Panthers improved to 25-4 on the season, thanks in large part to Tournament Most Valuable Player Alex Hall (6'2''-G-90), who scored 34 in the championship game and finished with a new GLVC Tournament scoring record with 79 points.
Drury earned its second GLVC title in program history as the Panthers also garnered the league's championship back in 2008. With the win Sunday, Drury also staked claimed to the GLVC's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament, which begins next week.
Drury held a 29-26 advantage at intermission Sunday in a game that saw the largest lead of the game extend to just six points by Drury, which came with 6:45 to go in the first half.
Hall's 34 points marked his sixth game this year of scoring 30 or more points and also tied the league's single-game high for the season with UW-Parkside's Jeremy Saffold (6'6''-F). His 79 points over the three tournament games set a new conference record, which bested USI's Brandon Hogg's mark of 77 set in last year's event. Hall also finished the tournament 15-of-26 from beyond the arc, which also set a new tournament record for made three-pointers, erasing the previous mark set by Lewis' Jason Genova in 2008 and Northern Kentucky's Jon Van Hoose in 2012.
In addition to Hall's appointment on the All-Tournament team, teammate Brandon Lockhart (6'1''-G-90) was also honored by the selected media representatives in attendance this week. Lockhart finished the title game with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting, six assists and five rebounds.
Southern Indiana (22-7) was paced by Keith Dewitt (6'9''-F) with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the loss. DeWitt and teammate Orlando Rutledge (6'6''-F) were also named to the All-Tournament team along with Bellarmine's Chris Dowe (6'2''-G). DeWitt averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds in tournament play, while Rutledge tallied 21.0 points and 9.7 boards over the three postseason contests.
In two games played, Dowe averaged 20 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.3 steals.
In its sixth GLVC postseason event, Drury now boasts an 11-4 record in tournament play.
