Richard Lusane's clutch 3-pointer save PRIME: Georgia PRIME 2014 UBA Champs - Jul 13, 2014
David Walls Reports: 7/13/2014
ATLANTA Richard Lusane (6'5''-G/F-84, college: Valdosta St.) had made a total of 45 3-pointers in the regular season before entering UBA Finals. None, however, might mean more to the UBA's Western Conference Player of the Year or to the Georgia PRIME than the clutch one he hit in with 0.0 seconds left in Sunday night's fourth quarter buzzer beater (down by 2).
The Stars were seconds away from winning their first UBA title. Fans heads fells as the game seemed over until "Rip" Lusane saved the day. The PRIME out last the Stars 84-83. The Stars took a 2 point lead with just 5.1 seconds left with a big 15 footer by Tay Merriewether (5'10''-PG-88, college: Eastfield Coll.). With the game on the line DeAndre Bray (5'6''-G-85, college: Jacksonville St.) whipped down the floor giving Lusane just 1.5 seconds to get a shot off. The rest is now UBA history.
Lusane was the saver of the game but the Finals MVP crown belongs to Derrick "Ray" Allen. Allen scored 18 of his game high 27 points in the 3rd quarter where he brought the PRIME back from 15 points. Allen never died knocking down three after three for the PRIME.
"D.A. was the deference maker for us tonight", said Davis. By far his best game.
Allen finished the game with 27 points and 5 rebounds going 7-11 from the three. League MVP DeAndre Bray was again a big time play in the moment scoring 10 of his 15 points in the 4th quarter. Bray also finished the game with 13 assists and 5 steals. Mr. Big shot Richard Lusane finished the game with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals. Former Finals MVP Brian Moultrie (6'6''-C/F-87, college: Armstr.Atlantic) added 18 points and 12 rebounds.
The Stars were lights out from start to finish. The Western Conference is now back. Never have we seen such a great team since the 2010 Texas Cyclones which won 20 games led by Jeremy Ware. The Stars led the whole game and deserved a place in the record backs; but maybe next year. Ty Thomas (6'6''-F-83, college: Concordia-St.Paul) was the top player for the Stars racking up 27 points, 5 rebounds and 4 show time dunks. League Defensive Player of the Year Earl Rabb (6'3''-G-87, college: Midwestern St.) added 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals for the Stars.
This will go down as the best UBA finals in six season.
MVP Freddie Williams, South win 2014 UBA All-Star Game - Jun 9, 2014
David Walls Reports: UBA All-Star Weekend
DAYTON, OH At halftime of what was a record-setting 2014 UBA All-Star game, Freddie Williams (6'2''-G-87, agency: Gamble Sports Management, college: Clayton St.) wasnt on anyones radar as far as the games MVP award was concerned.
By the time it was finished, he was the obvious choice.
Williams finished with 25 points, seven rebounds and 5 steals, and was the catalyst for the South coming back from an 10-point second half deficit to get the 115-112 victory.
It was definitely special, Williams said afterward. Just being out here with all these great athletes and playing in front of a great crowd in Dayton, and then the game got competitive. As athletes we all want to make the game competitive, especially in an All-Star game. It could get out of hand, but both teams competed until the end. And the South wanted to win this one.
Williams made sure of it. He scored 20 points and dished out five of his assists in the second-half, taking the game over at times while dazzling with his passing or ball-handling skills. One highlight saw him split two defenders and get into the lane, before finding a cutting Calvin O'Neil (6'4''-G-85, agency: Gamble Sports Management, college: Middle Tenn.St.) with a no-look bounce pass for a spectacular finish. Another saw him break down Jarrelle Redding off the dribble, before finishing himself with a high-arcing shot.
The MVP ended up being well-deserved, but the fact that Williams put together a performance worthy of it seemed to surprise him as much as the rest of us.
This was by far the best UBA All-Star Game in history. We saw great basketball. Calvin O'Neil showed us why he is one of the best in the league. Jay Bowdy (6'6''-F/G-83, college: W.Georgia) put on a dunking show for the fans as will as Adrion Graves (6'4''-G, college: Xavier) who is by far the best shooter in the league. Surprising we also saw UBA star Jermaine Barnes (6'4''-SG, agency: Gamble Sports Management, college: Point, GA) play 16 minutes. Barnes was ruled out this game due to a tore calf but still wanted to put on a show for the fans.
"Well I told all the guys I could play", said Barnes. It sucks to be hurt but when I saw how much fun these guys were having they made me feel like just for a second I could play. It was a great time.
When asked how he felt about his GIE teammate winning the MVP Barnes was very excited.
Ready Freddie is special, he said. Its just that simple. Hes a very special basketball player, very smart basketball player. His ability to jump, get into the lane, make shots around the rim he has a total package. And Ive always known that. Ive always witnessed that, I'm very proud of him.
The South continues to dominate the All-Star event winning its 6th time in all 6 seasons. But this by far was the best one. We all know this is an All-Star game and the guys only work 100% in the 4th quarter but it was worth it. Travis McAvene continues to show why he is one of the best coaches in the league along with Jeremy Ware in the North. But Michael Davis finds a way to win again. "It was a lot of fun", said Davis. Travis is awesome, he got those guys back in the game with double teams and heart. I respect him as a coach and a leader.
Next on the list will be the UBA playoffs. This has turned into a very successful UBA season. I was very impressed with the Gem City Slam for putting together a game All-Star game. David Herzog and Eva Costa did a wonderful job as the events 6th time around. It will be exciting to see if the UBA will return to Dayton or Atlanta. Either way the UBA is continuing to raise and be a power in the minor leagues.
UBA announces its 2014 All-Star Selections - Apr 23, 2014
David Walls Reports:
4/23/2014
On Tuesday night, the rosters for the 2014 UBA All-Star Game in Dayton, OH. were
completed with the announcement of the reserves for both teams.
While the starters are chosen by fan vote, the reserves are selected by the
coaching staffs.
Because Georgia PRIME finished the first half of the season with the best record
in the South, Michael Davis will serve as the coach and was responsible for
putting together the reserves for the West.
The Gem City SAM finished with the best record in the East, meaning Travis
McAvene and his staff was in charge of selecting the reserves for the Eastern
Conference team.
The teams are not completely finalized yet, as injuries will force at least one
of these players out of the game. At that point, it is up to the commissioner's
office to choose a replacement player. With
Jermaine Barnes returning from Europe, he will more than likely replace
DeAndre Bray (5'6''-G-85) of Georgia PRIME who is on tour.
The 2014 UBA All-Star Game will take place in Dayton, OH.
Where: Ponitz Career Technology Center
Address: 741 W Washington St, Dayton, OH 45417
