Disciples win UBA Championship: Justice and Barnes named Finals MVP - May 21, 2012

David Walls Reports:
ATLANTA, GA
UBA Championship

Black and gold confetti raining down upon him, Jermaine Barnes (6'5''-G/F-82, agency: Gamble Sports Management, college: Point, GA) walked to the scorers table, shook his fists and extended three fingers.

When he looked up, UBA Commissioner was waiting to shake his hand.

A Championship classic and this time, it finally went the Disciples way.

Barnes, the finals co-MVP, scored 30 points despite 10-of-25 shooting, and the Disciples won their 3rd UBA championship Sunday night, dramatically rallying from a terrible start deficit to beat the Georgia Lions in the UBA finals.

James Justice (5'10''-G-89, college: Martin Methodist) was the other half of the co-MVP award scoring 22 points, 4 rebounds and dishing out 6 assists. Justice has ended all questions about his ability to play on a pro level and not just be a dunker. Justice matched up with the UBA's premire point guard (DeAndre Bray (5'6''-G-85, agency: Gamble Sports Management, college: Jacksonville St.)) and never took a back seat. He will be entering this year NBA draft and looks to have a bright future.

Tony Omotayo (6'4''-F-85, college: Ft.Valley St.) was the top preformer for the Lions scoring a team high 23 points and pulling down 8 rebounds.

The Lions were out manned for the begining as the lost the best big in the league (Al'Lonzo Coleman (6'7''-F-89, agency: Strategic Sports, college: Presbyterian)). Coleman suffered and ankle injury in a Semi Finals win over the Tennessee Dragons. To add salt in the wound double-double machine Mike Corpening (6'8''-F-87, college: S.Wesleyan) was out for personal issues.

'We just had to take care of busienss', said Barnes. We wanted to compete against the full strength Lions but it didn't happen. I take my hat off to DeAndre Bray and the Lions and I know we will see them again.

UBA Playoff stats will be posted Tuesday May 22, 2012.

Jermaine Barnes named 2012 UBA MVP - May 2, 2012

GIE Morrow Disciples swingman Jermaine Barnes (6'5''-G/F-82, agency: Gamble Sports Management, college: Atlanta Christian) was today named the 2012 UBA Most Valuable Player, as voted on by the UBA 16 head coaches.

Barnes, a 6-5, 210-pound swingman out of Point University, started in all 20 regular season games he played for the Disciples, averaging 30.1 points, 6.5 assists, 8.1 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 37.2 minutes. A 2012 UBA All-Star, Barnes ranked first in the League in scoring, finishing with double-digit points in all 20 games. He led the Disciples in scoring in 15 games and was the assist leader 10 times.

Twice honored for his play during the season, Barnes was named the UBA Player of the Month in January and the Performer of the Week on Nov. 20 (50 points). He led the Disciples to an UBA best 19-1 regular season record and the top seed in the UBA Playoffs presented by Phoenix Group. Barnes will return to the postseason for the Disciples after returning from the Dominican Republic, he is averaging 23.0 points, 3.5 assists, 12.5 rebounds and 40.0 minutes.

Barnes was signed by Titanes de Miramar in the Dominican Republic. Mibahia news was quoted by saying Barnes had the best debut in Miramar history posting a monster double-double with 28 points and 17 rebounds.

'The impressive season that JB had for the Disciples is a testament to his talent and work ethic', said D.J. Douglas , Disciples head coach. His leadership helped the Disciples to its best season yet, while individually he earned an UBA All-Star selection and his 3rd UBA MVP. He has emerged as the leagues top prime time player, and I congratulate him on a fantastic season.

Barnes will be presented with the 2012 UBA Most Valuable Player trophy May 28, 2012 when he return from the Dominican Republic.
