From #6 Seed to Champion!!-Mar 10, 2024
Azusa Pacific is the first six seed in PacWest history to win the conference tournament with 78-66 win over Point Loma Just a few short weeks ago, the Azusa Pacific men's basketball team was in seventh place and in danger of missing the PacWest tournament for the first time since becoming a member of the conference. Today, the No. 6 seed Cougars are the PacWest Championship tournament champs after beating No. 1 seed and host Point Loma, 78-66. It's just the second time that a No. 6 seed has reached the title game (Point Loma in 2017 was the other) and the first time that last seed has won the championship. The Cougars (14-16) have earned the PacWest's automatic berth into next week's NCAA West Region tournament. Point Loma (21-9), who is ranked No. 7 in the latest NCAA ranking, will have to wait to learn their postseason fate during the NCAA's Sunday Selection call. Azusa Pacific's improbable run in San Diego continued today. They opened the tournament on Thursday with a 56-55 win over No. 3 seed Hawai`i Pacific, followed that by toppling PacWest co-champs Academy of Art (79-72) and won their third game of the week this afternoon over the other co-champs, Point Loma. The Cougars were very close to dominent today. They led for 37 minutes of the contest, allowing the home team only one lead (4-2) in the opening moments. APU led at the half (39-29) and pushed their lead to 54-42 with 12:30 left on a George Reidy (6'5''-G) three-pointer. Point Loma would never get closer than 10 points for the rest of the game. Ethan Speaker (6'7''-F) led APU with 21 points, hitting a number of free throws late in the game to help clinch the victory. He converted 10-of-12 free shots and also had nine rebounds and four assists. Point guard Bryce Sloan (6'4''-G) added 13 points, ten rebounds and five assists. Ken West (6'8''-F-2000) had 11 points and seven boards and Kaleb Taylor (6'11''-F) had ten points. Luke Smith led PLNU with 18 points. Coby Barnes (6'4''-G) added 15 and Zack Paulsen (6'4''-G) added 13. "Our togetherness is why we are still here and why we are playing next week," said APU head coach Peter Bond. "Even at our lowest points, these guys never stopped believing in each other. They stayed together and kept fighting." Reidy was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for his 48 total points in the three games and his hustling defense. Teammates Speaker and Sloan were also on the all-tournament team along with Paulsen and Wynton Brown of Point Loma, and Hawai`i Hilo's Kalique Mitchell (6'6''-F).
