Second Half Scoring Blitz Leads Point Loma to Title-Mar 5, 2023
Point Loma's 23rd consecutive win of the 2022-23 season required a different script.
The 80-69 win in the Pacific West Conference title game over Azusa Pacific gives the Sea Lions another trophy to go with their regular season banner. They will also carry their No.1 west region ranking into the NCAA West Regional next week, which will more than likely be at their own Golden Gym. It was the third time this season that they have beaten the Cougars, but it wasn't the least bit easy on this Saturday afternoon at McCabe Gymnasium at Chaminade University. The Sea Lions trailed 52-45 with 14:30 left after the Cougars hit free throws, the result of a technical foul on PLNU head coach Matt Logie . Whether it was related or not, the Sea Lions responded with an 18-2 run and ultimately a 28-6 blitz. Shamrock Campbell (6'1''-G) had a huge role in that with a trio of three-pointers in a 2:30 span that fired up his team and the Point Loma crowd. The Cougars wouldn't get closer than the final 11-point margin after that. PacWest regular season Player of the Year and Tournament Most Valuable Player Kaden Anderson (6'8''-F) was dominent from the opening tap. He had 20 first half points and would finish with 31. He also had eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Campbell finished with 17 on 6-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. Brian Goracke (6'5''-G) added 10 points and eight rebounds. APU's Bryce Sloan (6'4''-G) kept his team in striking distance through the first 25 minutes. He had 15 points at halftime and finished with 19. Hayden Gray (6'4''-G) had 12 for the Cougars. Point Loma's Luke Haupt (6'6''-F) went down with an injury in the first half and wasn't able to return. His status for the regional tournament is not yet known. What is known is that Point Loma will take a 27-3 record and a 23-game win streak into the NCAA tournament. Azusa Pacific, ranked No. 3 in last week's listing, saw their 10-game win streak snapped. They will advance (unofficially) to the tournament as well with a 22-7 record. Courtesy of thepacwest.com All-PacWest Awards 2023-Mar 4, 2023
