Caldwell Rallies in 2nd Half to Claim CACC MBB Championship-Mar 6, 2023
Derrick Bueno (6'7''-F) came off the bench to knock down 22 points, including 16 in the second half, to rally Caldwell to a thrilling 72-69 win over Thomas Jefferson University in the 2022-23 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Basketball Championship Final at the Gallagher Center in Philadelphia. Bueno was named the most valuable player of the championship, as he also came off the pine to net 17 points in Caldwell's semifinal win over Chestnut Hill on Saturday night.
The Cougars (N#1 Seed) won their first CACC Men's Basketball title since 2007 when they knocked off the University of the Sciences. Caldwell also won the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament, which will be held next weekend at a site to be determined. Caldwell trailed 56-47 with 11:35 remaining following a three-point play from Erik Timko (6'4''-G), but the Cougars answered with eight-consecutive points to climb back to within one at 56-55 with 9:59 to go. Bueno converted a three-point play and a three-pointer on back-to-back possessions to highlight the run. Bueno converted a layup with just 7:30 left to knot the score at 59-all, and then followed with another basket the next time down the court to put Caldwell up two. Jefferson would go up 65-62 minutes later, but Caldwell regrouped with a quick 4-0 charge to take the lead as they would never look back in earning the win. Darnell Evans (6'0''-PG) pumped in a team-high 23 points for Caldwell. All five Jefferson starters scored in double-figures, including 18 points from Timko and a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds from Bismark Nsiah (6'6''-F).
