Late Jumper Propels Felician to 2022 CACC MBB Title - Mar 8, 2022
Dee-End McRae (6'5''-F-2000) knocked down the game-winning jumper with :02 remaining to lift Felician University to a thrilling 65-64 win over Dominican College in the 2021-22 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Basketball Championship Final on Sunday at Newman Center in Caldwell, Dee-End McRae finished with 13 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts.Justin Davis (6'4''-G) logged a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds to be named the most valuable player in the championship. His double-double came a day after he erupted for 32 points in a semifinal win over Post University Felician (North #3 Seed) improved to 19-9 overall and locked up the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament next week at a site to be determined. It was the program's first conference championship since 2010. Joining those two on the all-tournament eam was teammate Jaylen Colon (6'1''-G-2000), who had 11 points on Sunday. Dominican (North #2) dropped to 21-7 overall and will await word of an at-large bid on Sunday night during the Division II Selection Show at ncaa.com (.) Jalen Burgess (6'4''-F) had 27 points for the Chargers in the setback. Felician raced out to a double-digit lead in the first half, but Dominican roared back in the second half. The final 2:06 of the game featured six lead changes. Justin Copman (6'6''-F/C) sank a pair of free throws to put DC up 60-59, but McRae hit a layup at the other end with 1:44 to go to put Felician back out in front (61-60). Burgess converted a pair of foul shots 12 seconds later, but Nas Amos (5'8''-PG-2000) countered for Felician with two free throws of his own to make it 63-62 Golden Falcons. Daniel Grant (6'1''-G) was fouled taking a shot at the other end, and hit his two free throws with :27 left to give Dominican a 64-63 edge. It was left to McRae as he drilled a mid-range jumper from the left elbow with :02.3 left to put Felician back up for good. Dominican had one final chance as Burgess had a buzzer-beating attempt from just over the midcourt stripe, but it rang off the side of the backboard. Felician's win denied Dominican a third-straight CACC Tournament Championship, as the Chargers had captured the trophy in 2019 and 2020. The 2021 champion was Bloomfield College based on its regular season record as the conference tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All five Felician starters scored in double-figures, including Amos (14), Etnik Peci (6'1''-G-1999) (11 points) and Jaylen Colon (11 points). Wahaad Johnson (6'1''-PG-2000) was Dominican's other player to log double-digits in the scoring column with 11.
