Cal State Stanislaus Wins Conference Tournament Title, Headed to NCAA Tournament - Mar 8, 2014

The Cal State Stanislaus claimed the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament title and claimed the automatic qualifier for the Division II NCAA Tournament after defeating Chico State in the Conference Tournament final, 82-70 on Saturday night.
Cal State Stanislaus, winner of seven straight games, improved to 21-8 overall. The 21 wins also tied a school record in victories, matching the record set by the 1988-89 team coached by John Jones in the program's final season as a Division III program.
Inside the Citizens Business Bank Arena, the Warriors were led by CCAA Newcomer of the Year, Chris Read (6'4''-G-93)'s 20 points and tournament's Most Outstanding Player Sam Marcus (5'8''-PG-92) had 19 points after hitting 3-for-3 from long range in the second half.
Marcus, a 5-8 senior, was truly touched when his name was called out as this year's tournament MVP. On the weekend, the Bakersfield native averaged a 12 points per game with 12 assists, six rebounds, and two steals.
"Sam's been with us for four years and has been through some tough times," Reynolds said. "He's the glue, the assist man and the guy who gets the ball upcourt for us without much help.
"Through his work and determination, he's got us to a school-record 21 wins in Division II. He's very much underrated and I'm so happy he got the MVP after not making the all-CCAA team."
Joining Marcus on the All-tournament team was fellow Warriors, Marcus Bell (6'9''-C-90) and Rob Walters (6'7''-F-90), along with Chico State's Rashad Parker (6'0''-PG) and Jordan Semple (6'7''-F-92).
This year marks many broken records and first for not just the Warriors, but head coach Larry Reynolds as well. The 2013-14 Tournament title marks Reynolds first of his career in the CCAA, despite winning three regular-season Championships while coaching at Cal State San Bernardino from 1999 to 2002.
Chico State was playing for the conference's postseason tournament title for the third season in a row but have yet to win the tournament banner. Leading the Wildcats in their efforts was Parker with 17 points on the evening. Fellow senior - Amir Carraway (6'6''-F-91) - contributed 16 points and four assists.
Cal State Stanislaus, which ranked No. 9 in the latest West Region poll, will receive the CCAA's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. The regional tournament pairings will be announced by the NCAA on NCAA.com Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Pacific.
