Second Half Run Nets Yotes Cascade Conference Title - Mar 6, 2014
Back-to-back Demetrius Perkins (6'4''-G) three-pointers fueled a 24-5 run early in the second half, as The College of Idaho captured championship game of the Cascade Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, defeating Northwest Christian, 83-59. The victory for the No. 3 ranked Coyotes (28-5) was their 15th in a row and completed a perfect 17-0 record inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center - their first unbeaten home record since 1987. NCU (18-13) used a 10-2 run late in the first half that cut a 31-19 lead to 35-29 at the break. After a Travis Pacos (6'3''-G-93) basket off a C of I turnover got the Beacons within four, the Yotes clamped down defensively, holding the visitors to just one made field goal over an eight minute stretch. Free throws from Taylor Pruett (6'7''-F) and Antonio Garrett (6'6''-F) started the run, with a Sydney Donaldson (6'3''-G) baseline jumper extending the lead to 42-33. After NCU got within 44-36 on a Coleton Baker (6'3''-G-91) lay-up, Perkins drained his second-straight triple, starting a 17-0 surge that broke the Beacons back. Josh Wilson (6'3''-G) added a pair of baskets, with the Yotes going 8-for-10 from the line in the run, pushing the margin to 61-36. The Coyotes won for the 28th time, joining the 1986-87 team in the 28-win club - trailing only the 1995-96 team that won 31 games and secured the NAIA Division II National Championship. Garrett led the Yotes with 20 points and 10 rebounds - including a pair of late three-pointers. Perkins scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half, with Wilson scoring 14. C of I held a commanding 51-33 lead on the glass - as all 13 players who saw action had at least one rebound. Baker led the Beacons with 19 points, with Austin Kuemper (6'9''-F) adding 13 points in the loss. NCU was limited to just 36-percent shooting from the floor and were outscored 23-7 at the free throw line.
