Coyotes Soar Past Raiders, Cut Down Nets - Mar 4, 2015
Senior guard Demetrius Perkins (6'3''-G) flirted with a triple-double as the No.6 ranked College of Idaho capped off a perfect home season with an 86-79 victory over the No.23 ranked Southern Oregon University in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championship game, presented by U.S. Bank, in front of a standing room only J.A. Albertson Activities Center. The Coyotes (28-5, 14-4) came out of the gates hot, hitting on 17-of-30 from the field to take a 44-32 lead into the intermission. The Raiders (24-9, 11-7) quickly cut into the deficit out of the half, going on an 11-4 run through the first three minutes of the final period. With 9:43 remaining in the contest, Jordan O'Byrne (6'0''-PG) hit one of his four 3-pointers in transition to give the C of I a 67-58 lead. SOU would draw even with the Yotes over the next three minutes, thanks to a 9-0 run. The two squads would draw level one more time in the closing minutes, setting up Perkins for the turning point of the game when he was fouled after drilling a 3-pointer in the corner, converting the and-one to give the Coyotes the lead for good. Southern Oregon was able to come within two points of C of I with two minutes remaining but did not score another field goal until the final basket of the game. Jordan West (6'8''-F) led the Raiders with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-14 shots with Eric Thompson (6'8''-F), Joel Spear (6'3''-PG-94), and Tim Weber (6'8''-G-93) all scoring in double-figures. Weber led the game with eight assists to go with his 10 points and six rebounds. With the win, the Coyotes extended their home-court winning streak to 34 games and stayed perfect inside the state of Idaho for the past two seasons. The win also secured the first back-to-back conference tournament championship for the Coyotes since the 2003-04 season. C of I joins the short list of teams to win back-to-back regular season and post-season conference tournaments, joining Northwest Nazarene (1994-96) and Oregon Tech (2008-2012). The College of Idaho now leads the CCC in number of conference tournament championships with seven.
