William Penn Claims 2026 Heart Conference Tournament Championship Title-Mar 3, 2026
The No. 2 seed William Penn University claimed the 2026 Heart of America Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Championship with a 95-90 overtime victory over No. 1 seed Graceland University on Tuesday evening.
William Penn secured its first tournament title since 2023 and adds to its history of success in the event, which includes six overall conference tournament championships.
Graceland opened the contest with a 15-2 run and led 46-39 at halftime. The Yellowjackets shot 44.3 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from three-point range, while the Statesmen finished at 42.2 percent from the floor and 40.0 percent from beyond the arc.
William Penn responded early in the second half and took its first lead of the game at 49-48 following a three-pointer at the 17:09 mark. The teams traded leads throughout the period. Graceland held a 71-62 advantage with 9:11 remaining, but the Statesmen rallied down the stretch.
A three-pointer with 2:58 left tied the contest at 78-78. William Penn converted two free throws with 38 seconds remaining in regulation to even the score at 80-80, and a defensive stop forced overtime.
In the extra session, William Penn gained separation midway through the period. A three-pointer at the 3:00 mark put the Statesmen in front 85-82, and they maintained the lead for the remainder of overtime, converting key free throws in the final seconds to secure the win.
William Penn held a 44-33 advantage in rebounds and finished with 11 turnovers, compared to nine for Graceland.
Both teams conclude the season with 25-6 overall records. William Penn finished 16-4 in conference play during the regular season, while Graceland posted a 17-3 conference mark.
With the victory, William Penn earns the conference's automatic berth to the NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship. Graceland also secured a berth to the NAIA National Tournament after claiming the Heart of America Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Regular-Season Title.

Foday Sheriff, forward from the William Penn University, picked up the Player of the Year at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. He received multiple other awards, was named the Newcomer of the Year and was voted to the First Team. Sheriff averaged almost 17 points and 10 rebounds per game in the league. He has totalled 5 games of 20 or more points and recorded double-doubles in 12 games on the year. Sheriff's 30 points against the Northwestern College, IA were the most he scored in the 25 26 season. He won the NJCAA D3 North Plains District championship title in 2025.
Daviyon Gaston, point guard from the Grand View University, was voted the Defensive Player of the Year of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. He collected multiple other honors, was selected to the First Team and Defensive Team. Gaston registered almost 18 points and over 5 rebounds per game that season in the league. He has totalled 8 games of 20 or more points and had double-doubles in 2 games on the year. Gaston's 36 points against the Avila were the most he scored in the 25 26 season. Cole Bowen, guard from the Graceland University, was chosen to the First Team at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. He was also named to the Defensive Team. With Bowen's excellent performance, the Graceland University achieved the best record of the season in the league, finishing with an impressive 24 to 5 in the regular season. Bowen's 27 points against the Peru State College were the most he scored in the 25 26 season. Among many awards he played in the final of the HAAC Tournament in 2025. He was also selected as the All-HAAC Player of the Year in 2025. Bowen was selected to the NAIA All-America Second Team in 2025. He was also selected as the All-GPAC Honorable Mention between 2023 and 2024.
Isaiah Reams, point guard from the Central Methodist University, earned a spot in the First Team of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. He averaged over 18 points and 4 rebounds per game in the league. Reams has totalled 10 games of 20 or more points on the year and registered 30 or more points in 3 games.
