The
No.9 ranked Oregon Tech men's basketball team outscored The Evergreen State by
20 points in the second half, lifting the Owls to an 82-72 victory over The
Evergreen State College tonight in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Finals.
After shooting 54.8% in the first period, the Owls held the Geoducks to only
29.2% (7-24) shooting in the second stanza. The Owls shot 39.4% for the game and
outrebounded their opponent 51-29.
Jguwon Hogges (5'8''-G) tied a career-high to lead the Owl attack with 28
points.
Joshua Wetzler (6'7''-C-84) finished with a double-double, including a
career-high 20 rebounds to go with 11 points. Wetzler reached 1,000 rebounds in
his career with tonight's effort.
Christian Cavanaugh (6'10''-F-86) netted 17 points and grabbed eight
rebounds, followed by 10 points from
Justin Parnell (6'4''-G).
Michael Ward (-F) and
Nicholas Moore (6'7''-F) led the Geoducks with 19 points apiece. Moore
grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, while Ward tallied five.
Julio
Feliciano (6'8''-C) finished with 13 points and four assists. Tech held
Cascade Conference Player of the Year and CCC leading scorer,
Nathan Menefee (5'10''-G), to only eight points on 1-12 shooting for the
game. The Owls led 7-3 early, but Evergreen would mount a comeback and quickly
tie the contest at 7-7. After the third tie of the game, it was all Geoducks. At
the 10:53 mark, the Owls found themselves down 10 points, 26-16, and by as many
as 15 points, 44-29, with only 4:01 remaining in the first half. Oregon Tech
closed out the half with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 44-34 at intermission.
A 14-5 Owl run, capped off by a
Jguwon Hogges 3-pointer, closed the gap to 49-48 at the 15:07 mark. Another
Hogges 3-point field goal then gave Tech their first lead since early in the
first half, and all the momentum they would need. Tech then quickly jumped out
to an eight point advantage, 61-53, with 10:28 to play, but a
Michael Ward 3-pointer closed the Geoduck gap to 63-60 with 9:53 on the
clock. An ensuing 8-2 Hustlin' Owl run got the lead back up to nine points,
71-62, as the Owls were able to hold on over the remaining six minutes to secure
an 82-72 victory in tonight championship game.
