No. 3 Golden Knights Defeat No. 8 California (Pa.) 89-74 for First PSAC Championship Since 2015-Mar 11, 2024
Gannon University won its third all-time PSAC Men’s Basketball Championship and first since the 2015 season with Sunday’s 89-74 victory over California in the 2024 PSAC Championship Game. The first half was closely contested and featured 10 ties and 15 lead changes, with California leading 36-35 at the break, marking the first time Gannon had trailed at home all season. The Vulcans also led Gannon 17-5 in fast break points and 22-8 in points in the paint, but adjustments from Gannon head coach Jordan Fee , voted the PSAC Western Division Coach of the Year in his first season, were forthcoming.
Gannon came alive in the second half, with Josh Omojafo (6'5''-G) scoring four quick points to make it 39-36, then, after a K.J. McClurg (6'3''-G) three-pointer (three of his team-high 20 points for Cal in the game), Gannon’s Derrick James (5'10''-PG) scored seven consecutive points in under a minute to push the Golden Knight lead to 46-39. James finished the contest with 17 points, while Omojafo was named PSAC Men’s Basketball Tournament MVP after scoring 30 points in the semifinal against Millersville and 22 points in the title game.
Both Gannon and California now await word about further postseason matchups, with the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Selection Show scheduled for 11 p.m. on Sunday, March 10.
With Gannon men's and women's basketball teams both winning 2024 titles, it marks the sixth time in PSAC history that has been accomplished. IUP men and women won both Championships in 2019, while Millersville (1987) and Cheyney (1983, 1982, 1980) also accomplished the feat.
