Winona State Wins NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament Title

Fifth seeded Winona State won the 2011 NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament Championship with a 58-41 win over sixth seeded St. Cloud State. The Warriors earn an automatic bid to next week's NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament, while the Huskies lose their first NSIC Tournament game (8-1) after winning the previous two NSIC Tournament Championships.
The Warriors lead nearly the entire way as they claimed their fifth NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament Championship and removed all doubt from its postseason destination.
The Warriors received a huge game from Clayton Vette and strong senior leadership from Ben Fischer to earn a 58-41 victory over St. Cloud State. The championship will be added to a WSU trophy case that already contains tournament titles from 2001, 2006, 2007 and 2008. The win also punches Winona State's ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh consecutive season.
Vette was a workhorse as WSU built a second half advantage that reached as many as 20. The junior scored 17 and grabbed nine rebounds, with 11 points and six assists after halftime, earning all-tournament honors.
The MVP of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament went to Ben Fischer who scored eight points and dished out seven assists. Jon Walburg added 12 points and six rebounds.
Winona State held the Huskies to just 23 percent shooting in the first half, building a 22-15 lead. St. Cloud State shot 28 percent for the game and hit just six of 17 3-point attempts. The Warriors shot the ball at a 43 percent clip on their way to the win.
WSU is now 20-9 on the season, the seventh consecutive year the Warriors have reached at least 20 wins.
