Charleston Tops West Liberty to Win MEC Tournament Title-Mar 11, 2024
The top-seeded Charleston Golden Eagles took home their second Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship on Sunday evening with a 78-68 victory over second-seeded West Liberty at WesBanco Arena.
With the win, Charleston improved to 25-6 on the season and earned the MEC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament.
Charleston shot 46 percent (11-24) from the field and made 24-of-28 free throw attempts in the second half to break open its two-point halftime lead (31-29).
Charleston led by as many as 18 points at the 3:49 mark of the second half.
Despite being outshot by the Hilltoppers (44.2%-to-39.3%), Charleston held a 40-30 advantage on the glass, including a 14-5 edge on the offensive boards. The Golden Eagles also had a 16-0 advantage in second-chance points and a 21-6 edge in fast break points.
The UC defense limited the Hilltoppers to just 6-of-22 from three. The Golden Eagles also forced 12 tunrovers and turned them in 17 points on the offensive end.
Charleston had four double-figure scorers, led by Dwaine Jones Jr. (6'5''-G-2001) with 23 points and seven rebounds. Deairius Barker (6'0''-PG) recorded 19 points and four rebounds, while Tyler Eberhart (6'7''-F) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Shunta Wilson (6'5''-F) finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
West Liberty was whistled for 31 fouls in the game, which resulted in a 32-of-39 performance from the charity stripe for UC.
West Liberty also had five double-figure scorers, led by Kyler Daugustino (6'1''-G) with 15 points. Christian Montague (6'1''-G-1999) and Alek West (6'4''-G) netted 11 points apiece.
Jones was named the 2024 Mountain East Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Eddie Colbert III (6'6''-F) and Tyler Eberhart, West Liberty’s John Korte (6'6''-F) and Zach Rasile (6'1''-G), Fairmont State’s Zyon Dobbs (6'4''-G), West Virginia State’s Anthony Pittman (6'5''-G/F) and Concord’s Kollin Tolbert (6'2''-G).
Tolbert had the tournament’s highest scoring average at 20.0 points per game.
