CBU wins the 2012-13 GSC Men's Basketball Championship - Mar 11, 2013
Birmingham, Ala. The Christian Brothers University defeated Valdosta State University and claimed the 2012-13 GSC Basketball Championship on Sunday.
Christian Brothers dominated most of the first half, led by guard Trey Casey (6'3''-G) who had 14 points. Josh Sparks (6'9''-F) led VSU into the half with seven points and eight rebounds. Three-point shooting was the story at halftime. CBU was 5-13, while VSU went 0-6. Although CBU carried the 37-24 lead into halftime, VSU controlled the boards with 23 rebounds to CBUs nine.
The second half saw CBUs lead start to fade as Shaquille Harris (6'1''-G-91) and Sparks powered VSUs resurgence. The game would come down to the wire with Harris heaving a desperation three-point attempt, but it just fell short. CBU would go on to win, 65-62.
Casey led the charge with 19 points and five steals for CBU, while Harris (15 points) led VSU along with Sparks, who had another double-double (15 points and 13 rebounds).
No. 2 Christian Brothers, having claimed the GSC Championship, is now an automatic qualifier for the NCAA DII Tournament.
