Regular Season Champ Walsh Claims Men's Basketball Tourney Title - Mar 6, 2022
The top seed and host Walsh Cavaliers completed the season sweep, capturing the Great Midwest Men's Basketball Championship with a 76-62 win over No. 6 seed Cedarville on Saturday. Garrison Keeslar led Walsh with game highs of 18 points and five assists.Walsh (23-6), ranked first in the most recent Midwest rankings, will play in the NCAA Tournament and awaits its postseason assignment with the possibility of being a host there as well. Walsh has now won three of the last four Great Midwest tournament crowns, also winning in 2019 and 2020. Cedarville struck first, building an early 10-4 lead but Walsh chipped away until tying the game at 17 midway through the first half. WU finished the first half on a 14-5 run to lead 37-30 at halftime. Walsh's lead reached double figures before the first media timeout of the second half and the Cavs cruised from there. Tim Smith Jr. (6'7''-F/G) scored 16 points and Luke Howes (6'1''-G-2002) 12 for Walsh. Branden Maughmer (6'3''-G-1999) and Kollin Van Horn (6'8''-C-1999) each scored 12 points to lead Cedarville, which awaits its postseason chances with a 19-12 overall record.
