Bellarmine Knocks Off #3 Kentucky Wesleyan for GLVC Title
Junior guard Jeremy Kendle (6'1''-G) exploded for 31 points and lifted Bellarmine to the school's first Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Basketball Championship on Sunday afternoon at the TRAC with a 79-69 win over third-ranked Kentucky Wesleyan.
Kendle was 13-for-26 from the field on the afternoon and also had 10 boards from his point guard position. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament, joining teammate Braydon Hobbs (6'5''-G) on the All-Tournament Team.
Bellarmine (22-8) shot 50 percent from the field, including a 60 percent effort in the second half helping the Knights extend their five-point halftime advantage.
Kentucky Wesleyan (29-4), which had beaten Bellarmine in each of the teams' previous two meetings, shot just 30.8 percent in the second half and 35 percent for the game. Included in that shooting effort was a 25 percent performance from the three-point line.
The Panthers were led by Desmond Stephens (5'9''-G-87) who scored a team-high 19 points. Teammate Kwan Waller (5'11''-G-89) chipped in 14 points and both were named to the All-Tournament Team. Drury's Dennon Mitchell (6'2''-G-90) was the final member of the All-Tournament Team.
The two teams will now advance to next weekend's NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.
